Aliens: Am I bovvered?

Hello, I'm the Gnome, you may have seen my in such threads as Rise of the Superbeasts?, Faking your own death? and of course the classic To Die or Not?

So now I come to you with a new fantastical dilemma!

If aliens (the extraterrestrial kind) came tomorrow and said "Hey! We're here! We exist, we're not going to smite humanity or help it in any way we just thought you'd like to know that you are not alone." Then they left. Every human has seen this message (possibly with through the use of a 'mind ray').

Would you care? Would it effect your life in anyway? How would society as a whole react, in your opinion? Would their appearance matter to your reaction?

I'll add my own thoughts shortly, must rush to buy chicken breasts...

Would the confirmation of alien life effect your daily life? 27 votes

It would make for an interesting chat down the pub that night but that's about it.

    Would you care?
    Yes.
Would it effect your life in anyway?
I fail to see how confirmation (if/when proven true) of intelligent life outside this world could not effect someones life.
How would society as a whole react, in your opinion?
Confusion. Denial. Anger. The usual way we take things.
Would their appearance matter to your reaction?
How do you mean? If they were little grey men would I be more willing to accept them than if they were blobs of jelly?

    Paranormal(weirdo) forum, Thata way! ---> :p

seriously though, it'd be nice to know, but i seriously doubt it would alter a lot...

America would probably try a war on aliens...

Exactly, oh and make sure that our politicians sort out the "no work visa". We don't want them coming here looking for work and, like the Roma gypsies, have their situation described as an extra-terristian crisis so they get council houses and welfare.

I've always assumed that there's intelligent life out there (there's some here too, but not as much as people think there is :D ), so I can't see how confirmation of it would make a whole heap of difference to me.

I'd prob just say "Yup I knew it".
America would start talking about alien terrorism and get more weapons.

That'll be it, the government will spend millions rebuilding the red cow roundabout and some aliens will come along and set up a camp on it:D

If they were going to destroy us, share some of their knowledge or let us visit their home planet(s) then maybe but as that isn't going to happen I would have to agree with you zaph.

if aliens did arrive, you'd have all the weirdo going 'see we were right all along..crop circles....abductions...blah...blah'

i just dont think i could listen to cocky weirdos.

How could it not affect every aspect of daily life.

I think it'd be great, but I can't see how it would change my day to day life in any major way.

It'd be interesting to see how the Creationist crowd would manage to find some obscure passage in the Bible to show how alien life is compatable with Christianity.

Even more fun would be if it was proved that the human race was just a lab experiment for the aliens who created us.

It would be cool, we could play 5 notes to welcome them and all would be well.

I fail to see how confirmation (if/when proven true) of intelligent life outside this world could not effect someones life.

As you said, confusion, denial, anger. Frankly as we both know there are some closed minded people out there whose world view and life would be drastically effected.
How do you mean? If they were little grey men would I be more willing to accept them than if they were blobs of jelly?

Exactly, do you not think some people would be happy to see beings that were vaguely recognizable and thus more relatable than say a giant blob of jelly?

I wouldn't be happy if the aliens were these guys:

Reminds me of this short film about alien refugees

Now, if they were right all along they weren't weirdos were they?

Nice thought biko, personally I am a firm believer that aliens are out there somewhere. Having said that, no matter what goes down this guy will still be a weirdo. ;)

The idealist says it may unite humanity to working together, but the realist says that the various world religions would go mentalist.
