C4, Foreign Channels & regular channels?

Looking for the ideal, I know, but can anyone advise? I am Dublin based. Currently have NTL Digital but it frequently doesn't work and I'm pissed off paying per month for such a poor service. What I'd like is a free to air system that includes all the regular channels (RTEs, BBCs, ITVs etc) plus C4, More 4, plus German TV channels like ARD, ZDF, Das Erste etc. If that's not possible using just free-to-air, would a combination of NTL analogue (to get RTE and C4 etc) and a free-to-air system be the next best option?
I am not looking to do a DIY job but am looking for advice before I go to installers because I have a feeling many of them are just pushing the Sky box system. I would have as much objection to paying Sky per month as I currently have to paying NTL.
Looking to the future, which is the best way to go?

A free to air satellite system will get all BBC and ITV channels but for Cjhannels 4 and 5 in the republic you need a Sky digibox either with a British FTV card (see the sticky threads on the subject) or a Sky Subscription (expensive but probably no more than what youre paying now)

For German channels you need a second satellite dish pointed at the "Astra 1" satellite (19 degreed East) the UK/Irish channels use Astra 2 (28 degrees east)

A 60 centimetre dish is adequete for both satellites

More 4 is only available FTA on freeview in the UK. On satellite it is a subscription only channel.

FTA doesn't need a card. FTV does, and you can get a relative/friend to get you one in the UK.

Thanks for the advice. Is it possible to have just one satellite dish that would redirect to Astra 1 at the push of a remote for the German channels and back again to Astra 2 for the UK&Irish channels?

It is, indeed. You need a Multifeedbracket, preferebly a 20° one, two LNB's, a Diseqc switch and an 80cm dish (to be on the safe side). Sky dish won't work properly. Neither would a Sky digibox. You need a digital sat receiver which is Diseqc capable, most of them are.:)

Thanks. So I shouldn't go with Sky and should just get a free-to-air digital sat receiver installed of the type Seamgol mentions and stay with NTL for the channels I can't get on free-to-air?
If so, will this mean I have four remotes to work with - my TV, NTL, sat receiver and HDD/DVD remotes)?
