Don't think there's anywhere you should avoid as such but area around Nice train station isn't the greatest. Ezes is a lovely town, you should definitely visit Antibes (great beach), Cannes is vastly overrated. Monte Carlo is worth seeing if you haven't been before, it's expensive though. Drinking out in general is expensive, e7 upwards for a pint in general, more in Monte Carlo. If you go to Nice and walk along the promenade away from the Hotel Negresco and the airport you'll come to a headland and you can take an elevator up through that to a park that's got great views over the city. The Museum of Modern Art is worth a view too. It's free certain days. If you've cash the Negresco is the place to stay in Nice. If you don't, stay in one of the smaller towns outside most of which are great in themselves. It'll be cheaper and there's regular trains to Nice which don't cost very much. The trains don't cost much at all, but get somebody to show you how to use the machines. Otherwise you'll be queuing for ages to get tickets from a kiosk or will hold everybody else up in the queue for the machines (they don't like that!)

I'd recommend the Hotel Paris in Nice. It's about 65 or 70 euro per double room per night. It's location is second to none, right across the road from Negresco, close to all the shops and restaurants and the Promenade. It's more like a B&B and the rooms are small but very comfortable. Overall a charming place...

Scratch Hotel Paris, I meant to say Hotel Paradis. Check it out on web, still unbelievable location and review per Hotel Paris.
