    I bought a new 80gb iPod.
The battery appears to be full. I'm used to charging new electrical devices though. Do I need to charge this?

It's a Lithium Ion battery. I would always charge a Li-ion battery for 12 hours before initial usage.

I think its recommended that you charge it for 12 hours, or do a full charge recycle.

A few things I've bought lately have appeared to be full charge out of the box but I would still ensure it has a complete first charge cycle to ensure good battery health.

Not been an idiot or anything but what is a full charge cycle? Is that where you charge fully, then let the battery power die completely then recharge fully again? Or something else?

Yes, that's what a charge cycle is, but I wouldn't recommend it for a Li-ion battery (Which is what the iPod has), you can actually damage a Lithium-ion cell by depleting it.
