Pedal bikes in Ireland?

It seem like I've been through all bike shops in Dublin without any good result. Is it possible to buy a new bike with pedal breaks in Ireland? I'd like a sturdy, old-style simple bike. Are they nowhere to be found?

Might be a bit of a wait, but Kona will be releasing the Africa Bike to the general populous towards the end of the year (2008 collection). There's the added bonus that for every bike bought they will donate one to the Bike Town Project

You can get either of these things on their own very easily, e.g. either a fixie track bike or a city bike with basket/mudguards/rack etc.

Any particular reason you want both? Lever brakes are quite a bit better than pedal brakes and hardly that complex.

What you want is a coaster brake bike - they're not very popular in Ireland so you'll end up paying a pretty penny for one.
Schwinn make some pretty schweet ones. There's a place in Christchurch that sells them - on Patrick st?
When you're looking at the description of those bikes look at the rear hub - you'll see some of them are coaster brakes, thats what you're talking about.
If you're gonna be picky you are talking about spending quite a bit of dough ... if you're not willing to spend this much you might be better off looking into buying a single speed, normal-braked one :)

    Hey Ibjiba

Its just occurred to me that you might check out Kronan bikes. Made in Sweden and based on a Swedish army bike of the 1940s, this has a back-pedal brake, although you can also specify a front brake too. Its very heavy, but its very cool, particularly in some the colours you can specify.

The Irish distributor for Kronan is Pat Fleming. See web link above or type in URL www.kronan.com/ireland for his contact details. The basic single gear bike costs €450, while the three speed version costs €525.

That's crazy! I love these bikes, but what else can I get similar to that? Or, is it easy to make your own fixi with a flip-flop hub?

Maybe a Pashley? Wolfe Cycles in Kimmage stock them.

Some fixed gear bikes here: http://www.wheelworxbikes.com/index.php?cPath=1_157&osCsid=c952ebcc75418c6138a62ed4b0a673a3

Bit strange that they're so expensive compared to similar geared bikes, I thought they'd be cheaper as they had less parts.

Make sure you have a front brake as well as a coaster brake.

    http://www.sheldonbrown.com/coaster-brakes.html
When coaster brakes fail (usually the result of chain breakage or derailment) they fail suddenly and completely.
To be safe, any bicycle needs a front brake and some sort of secondary backup braking system.

You would say that. Your username in German means "strong".
