    Hello All,

I am in the process of restoring an old 1978 Landcruiser. It appears that there is no documentation with it at all. What do I need to do to get it officially on the road? Documents, tests etc.

    Many thanks.
    Michael

If you know who the car is currently registered to, you can ask that person to apply for a replacement log book and then transfer it in your name. If you don't know, there are several options. You can either ask the gards (believe it or not, they will actually give you the name and address of the current registered owner!!!) or you can go the official way, which is filling out a form, having the chassis number verified by an official garage, have the form signed by a peace commissioner and then send the whole thing off to shannon. (ask the gards, it's easier!)

It used to be fairly easy before to get a duplicate tax book. (not sure if this still works) If you know someone in a dealers, get them to ring Shannon for the duplicate and they should get it sent out with no questions asked. It used to be common enough before when a car would be traded in without its tax book

€6 to your local vehicle tax office and you will get the name of the registered owner of any vehicle. :)

I was unable to trace the last registered owner of my classic, even though I had his name on the log book, as the guy I bought it from had never registered it in his name and he had it for 12 years!
I wasn't aware the guards would provide you with the last registered owners details so I went down the other route. It's easy enough really. I just went out to the garage who service my wife's car and the guy I know there stamped the form without even looking at the car. Then I went to a commissioner for oaths (theres one in every town) paid a tenner and got that stamp as well. I sent the whole lot off to Shannon and had the car registered in my name 2 days later.

Sounds a bit dodgy!? Is this written down anywhere (eg on a county council website)
