Wonder ifk someone could answer this for me. A mate of mine, who is from burundi, was intending to come over for my wedding this Friday. He was requiring a visa to come over for the weekend which he thought was sorted, but the visa crowwd have now informed him they need more information. They havent given him enough time to get this sorted so he is having to cancel the trip.

What I'm wondering is this, could he fly into Belfast and then just get the bus down? Because he would be travelling within the UK (England to NI) He wouldnt need a visa would he? Would they check at Belfast airport?

    Cheers in advance.

i'm not 100% sure but i think that only applies if you have a uk or ireland passport, otherwise they would probably still check them.....i'm not sure though

Did he actually get the visa? Why did he think it was sorted?

Is he travelling from burundi to belfast via england. Has he already got his visa to stop over in england or was it a transfer flight?

Sorry , I didnt make it very clear did I. He has been living in the UK for nearly 7 years now but never had a reason to get a visa before (hadnt travelled outside the UK, only to go back to burundi to visit.

I presume he could get the boat over without a passport ?

If he is legally resident in the UK then he is free to travel to any part of it including NI.

If he is not a British (or EU) citizen and does not have the correct visas to enter ROI then no matter what route he takes it is illegal entry.

He could take his chances going that route but be warned Garda Immigration do sometimes stop the cross-border buses to check for illegals, it is apparently a popular route for illegal entry to Ireland.

Passport-free travel between UK-Ireland is only for UK and ROI nationals, everyone else (including other EU nationals) are required to carry passports and appropriate documentation the same as arriving direct from their home country.

There are usually immigration checks at sea ports on entering ROI, they are normally a bit on the casual side however if you don't look and sound like you are Irish/British they will probably demand passports/visas.
