In this thread, post spoilers for films, books etc, without spoiler tags.

In rear window, fight club and the machinist, one of the characters is the imagination of the protagonist.

In momento, he has already killed his wife's killer. He is now a hitman being manipulated to kill on contract.

    Kevin Spacey is Kaiser Solze

in high plains drifter, the man with no name is vengeance incranate - he was brutally murdered by the gang controlling the town while the townsfolk stood and watched. He paints the whole place red and names it hell before burning it to the ground.

In American Beauty, the neighbour who is a soldier with a son who sells drugs to the protagonist is the man who kills the protagonist. He does this because he reveals himself as a homosexual to him.

In Brazil, near the end of the film, things stop making sense really. This is because the main character's mind has snapped and he has withdrawn into cantatonic fantasy. (The resistance fighters coming in and saving him from torture on - all his fantasy)

In the king of comedy, the main character's plan works. He gets a slot on the late show and is launched to stardom and acclaim, being a big hit with the audience. The theme of his stand-up routine is that he has kidnapped the host in order to get a slot on the show -which of course he has. He goes to prison but seems happy with the result.

In Animal Farm, the pigs become more and more corrupt, until they are indistinguishable from their former human masters

In 1984, Winston Smith is broken by torture and renounces his ideals and his lover before being killed. He is broken in room 101, where they subject the victim to their worst fear. Winston is scared of rats, so they torture him with them.

In the liveship traders trilogy, Amber is the Fool from the Assassin books.

In the old man and the sea, the fisherman succeeds in returning the huge fish to the shore, but not before all the flesh on the fish has been devoured by sharks, leaving only the skeleton and the very long 'sword'.

    In Oldboy:
The vendetta against the protagonist is being carried out by a hugely successful businessman. When he was a teenager, he was having sex with his sister. The protagonist discovered this and told people, and the sister killed herself when she was found out.
It turns out that the love interest in the film has been pushed together with the protagonist by the villain and is, in fact, his own daughter.
In the climax, the protagonist begs the villain not to inform his lover/daughter of this fact, and goes as far as cutting out his own tongue in an act of penance. The villain's desire for revenge is satisfied, and he relents. The villain commits suicide very soon afterwards.
The hypnotist takes pity on the protagonist, and makes him forget that his lover is actually his daughter, and they are left to live in peace somewhere remote in the mountains.

His own daughter. The villain manipulates them to cause it to happen.
