What you're suggesting there is just fine, although id be of the opinion that matchsticks are maybe just a little too soft. Ive used toothpicks to plug dozens of stripped screw holes. Just glue as many as you can into the hole, really cram in as much as possible.

If you're really worried, or the guitar is really heavy, a dowel would be the obvious solution, however it would be overkill IMO.

i cut up the matchsticks into lil pieces, shove a couple in the original screw hole, then some glue, then a couple more matchstick bits then some glue, then do the same again,

then after a bit put the screw back in... works aok

Well, id use something harder than matchsticks, and i wouldnt cut them up into pieces.

I'd just take a clump of 5 or 6 toothpicks (or however many you think you need to plug the hole), snip the sharp ends off, dip the whole clump halfway into woodglue so theres some on the end and the sides (not too much, it will spread out), and shove the whole thing into the hole. If theres room for a couple more, do the same, dip them a little into the glue and cram them in. Leave dry for a couple of hours, and cut the end flush to the guitar & sand if necessary. Done
