    Hi,
I'm new to phtography and would like to buy a camera. One that has caught my eye is the Nikon D40, for €600. Is it worth the money? Or there is a bundle on pixmania.com for €742, D40 with a second lense. Any help would be greatly appreciated..

Canon EOS 400D all the way, mate.
    Superior camera!

D40 is a great camera. Great results, Great camera. One problem for beginners, the camera lacks a lens motor, so if you buy lenses which don't have motors you will have to manually focus. One big advantage to modern SLR cameras is you can buy old lenses cheap and mess around. In my shop D40 is €600 and the 400D is €900 there is a big difference so I would try source a Nikon D50 for beginning even a D70s which (last time I seen) came with a nice Tokina lens for €750. Also check out a minolta 5D (basically the same as a Sony Alpha 100).

I have a D40 and love it - the AFS lens issue isn't much of one for me (except maybe for the lack of a dirt cheap fast prime (Sigma f1.4 30mm is still a bit expensive)) I've no legacy lens to support and I know that if I want to mount AF-I lens at least I don't need to modify them before mounting on the D40 (something I heard must be done for other Nikons).

The Canon 400D is a great camera too I'm sure - go in to shops and have a look at what they are like "in the flesh". I liked the small size of the D40 and it's quiet shutter sound - I mount my 55-200vr or 18-55 kit lens on it and I'm set to shoot most subjects - the lack of a fast prime is somewhat made up by the fact that ISO1600 is very usuable in most situations.

If you are buying I have discovered that Irish prices aren't great - perhaps try online from Hong Kong? I bought mine in mainland China when it first came out for E480 (the price has now fallen to around E410) - I hear it's even cheaper in the US.

    Good luck with your decision!

Does anybody know where to get a Nikon d70s either in Dublin or online with reasonable shipping. I found one for €920 but that seems a bit steep.
Where did you see it for €750?

Ebay would be your best bet i think, since it and the D50 are long discontinued by Nikon, and haven't been replaced.

i bought my d80 from ebay for 812 euro...if you are going for a d40 now and are into photography, you'll prob end up getting a D80 at a later satge. not much diff in teh EOS and the nikon so i'd go for the nikon. it's brill!!!!!!!!

I hope to upgrade to a D80 on the cheap whenever it gets replaced by something shiny and new :)

I have heard that D40x has the same sensor as the D80 (don't ask me where I can't remember). Can anyone confirm this?

the D40 is €590 in town; with the €90 coupon based rebate, it comes down to €500.
