Discriminant Functions - Help Please

    Hi,

I just wanted to ask if there is someone here who knows about discriminant function analysis?

The problem is that I have a set of data (6 measurements on 158 subjects. Of these subjects 82 are male and 76 female) which I analysed for descriptive statistics and performed multivariate linear regression. I came up with some useful linear regression equations for predicting gender.

Now I would like to develop some discriminant functions (df's) for predicting gender as well. I went through similar steps as for the linear regression but ended up with two discriminant functions (one for group 0/male and one for group 1/female) with different constants and different coefficients. What I need is one function to cover both groups rather than a function for each group. Now I'm stuck. Any help would be appreciated.

I am using Minitab 14.1 by the way.

Thanks for any help. I should mention that maths and particularly stats are not my area at all so that anyone who can help me with easy and simple step-by-step explainations would be great.

    Best,
    Preusse

    Hi aequi,

thanks but maybe I should have been more specific? Wiki or, for that matter, google, and the different data analysis/stats books/online sources don't help me in that case. I am not a statistician and need a specific answer to my problem from someone who knows how discriminant functions work (preferably but not necessarily in Minitab).

    Best,
    Preusse
