iMacs and external displays

    Background:
OK the collaboration I work for needs a Mac to run a demo at a conference in September and we are getting two quotes for all our computer gubbins which only differ in supplier A has "only" a top of the range iMac and supplier B has a mac mini. Supplier B however is twice the cost of supplier A so I'll probably go with supplier A.

    Question:
Will an iMac behave like a MacBook/laptop when I plug in an external display and let me choose either an extended desktop (not what I want) or show a carbon copy of what is on the iMac's display?

I'd try my own iMac but it got stolen last year

    Thanks for any help.

by the looks of it the current crop of iMacs only support external displays in mirror mode:

    http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html

    - "Support for external display in video mirroring mode"

    Just above it says:
Support for external display in extended desktop
    Digital resolutions up to 1920 x 1200
    Analog resolutions up to 2048 x 1536

So I think either mirrored or extended.
