Broadband users in 30 of the world's most developed countries are getting greatly differing speeds and prices, according to a report.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6900697.stm
    CHEAPEST ENTRY LEVEL BROADBAND*
    Sweden $10.79
    Denmark $11.11
    Switzerland $12.53
    US $15.93
    France $16.36
    Netherlands $16.85
    New Zealand $16.86
    Italy $17.63
    Ireland $18.18
    Finland $19.49

I don't know what we are all complaining about ;)

Good thing we don't live in Turkey!

I was rather suprised to see the cheapest broadband here being rather close in cost to the UK. Feel like I can't winge about it as much now.

Obvioiusly does not include line rental here or else they count Ripwave?

I wonder how many of the other figures include line rental?

    remember

    1. we pay the highest line rental on the planet ( or in the oecd)
    2. we pay 20% over the average for entry on top of that
    3. we pay the most per mbit for high end packages in the oecd , way above the odds . Most of those countries have widely available 24mbit ADSL for €30-50 a month while the best we get widely is 5mbits for €160 or so.

    in summary, crap crap crap

The only BB technology where we are competitive is in 3g wireless BB and some fixed products .

$18.18 = 13.1899 Euro/ What package can you get for that?

Just returned from Hong Kong where entry level is 10MBps and costs about 10 dollars US.
    Lordy.

It seems that OECD only accepts its data from the CSO (part of Dept of Taoiseach) rather than the ESRI or conducting its own determinations.

CSO would have us believe that the gender ratio in West of Ireland is nearly the same as in Dublin . . . :D

These survey results seem very dodgy.
    e.g. in Turkey, 1mbit down/256k up *uncapped* is €55 /month,
    With a 4Gb cap, it drops to ~ €17
(details (in Turkish), this is from the incumbent provider)

It's sort of pointless publishing a list like this without taking into account the overall picture including caps & additional costs, as has been pointed out already.

the EUR15 / month is probably eircom's broadband in a bundle, roflmao

Denmark sounds reasonable enough, as you can get DSL there, without having to get a phoneline in (providers orders non-voice copper pair) and yes, it would be uncapped.

In Sweden you have to be in an apartement block/flat with fiber in the basement or already pay for a phoneline or cable-tv, so that's a bit unrealistic. Also those prices only cover the 4 big cities there, not the rest of the country.

For the rest of the countries, it's probably unrealistic, because the muppets haven't calculated the additional costs either, there (like line rental).

    /Martin
