This is one of the most bizarre pictures I've ever seen.
It's as though I'm looking at a board game!
Can anyone explain to me, how this effect is created?

    Cheers,
    P.

Wierd....its obviousl taken high and wide...but there seems to be far too much detail in the grass, and little or no shadow pertaining to the players even though they themselves look like they are floodlit....
    I dont know :D
    Looks like subbutteo :)

It could also be a tilt shift lens effect, where a gaussian blur is applied to the whole image then a black-to-whit-to-black gradiant is applied to the mask..

Might it be a clever depth of field trick? Though it looks very small, it'd be hard to get that kind of detail!

Sorry, I knew it was a tilt shift lens before I posted & should have noted that in the original post. I just need to read up on how it works.
I'm fascinated by the Subbuteo effect.

Aye, it's a fake tilt shift image. Done with photoshoppery via Lens Blur.

Just buy one of these lads and you're sorted. No photoshopping needed !

Alternatively take some inspiration from here and get reading some tutorials

The lens blur at the back and front (Done in PS) fools your brain into thinking you are looking at miniatures, which are often photographed in this way.

is there any practical reason that you would want to do this or just artistic ones?(if you understand what i mean)

Well by creating a narrow dept of field at such a distance has the effect of fooling you into thinking you are looking at a model ...

but the Tilt shift lens itself is intented to correct perspective errors (converging lines) when shooting things like buildings by shifting the focal plane of the lens and film (or CCD if you use digital) ... better explained using diagrams methinks -

You're ever so slightly off, the people who's feet are in focus should be wholey in focus - imagine it's a wide line of focus going straight up you can move around in the image... if you get me!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,547 ✭✭✭City-Exile

Yeah, it was my absolute, very first attempt.
I've been playing around with it some more.
Looking for better pictures to use.

Looks like a fun technique ... anyone want to post it in the Digital Darkroom ?

    Al ??

You can get those effects with a view camera as well as a tilt shift lens, with slightly less chance of vignetting.
