    Hi,

I am considering training for a commercial pilot license. It will be 3 years and possible another year after this. Is this a good job for the future, does anyone think? Oil is running out and I an basically unsure if this is a viable career for the long term (next 30-40 years)

Thanks in advance for any opinions.

why 3 years? Are you planning the modular route? From what I've heard intergrated training is preferred by the airlines.

Post your question in the newbies section on www.pprune.org. Those guys are the experts.

From what I've read if you are going into this business for the money and are dreaming of €100,000 a year salaries you can forget about it, those days are long gone. The likes of Ryanair have driven the wages and pilot's conditions way down.

If you find anyone who can predict the future let me know, I'd like to talk to them. I'm sure the airlines would also be very interested.

Most pilots I know say its not great anymore. But personally I think they are comparing with what the avation industry was like 20 yrs ago. They are not comparing it with a regular 9-5 office job. Yes its hard, yes there lots of things that can happen, medical or market conditions that could mean you only have a short career in flying. Yes the money is less and the hours, pressure and stress are much more than they've even been. But then so are a lot of jobs. The competition is much harder too.

Some people are quite happy to fly for smaller companies. They may not be as well off, but at least they are flying instead of chained to a desk.
