SkyHD Cabling Question

I have regular Sky with a single LNB. Thinking about getting Sky HD. I understand this will require a Quad LNB.

Will I also need to run additional cable or will the existing single cable from my dish to receiver suffice?

The reason I ask is that it's a long, inaccessible cable run and I'd prefer not to have to run more cable.

    Thanks

    Peter

Afraid two cables have to run from the quad for HD.

Would you not let the installer do that? That's what you pay your €45 for, unless you are installing it yourself?

By inaccessible, I mean that the present cable runs behind a tiled wall in a bathroom! It was put in during house construction. I'm due to re-model the bathroom soon and will take the opportunity to run the requsite cables - hence the question!

I don't think the €45 would extend to stripping and re-tiling my bathroom wall!

The SKY HD receiver will work with one cable. The other cable is for the 2nd tuner for recording one channel while watching another. It's a pity to waste the SKY+ facilities for the sake of a cable run - but technically you don't need a second cable.

So is it one cable per LNB or per pair?

eg. if I wanted to add multi-room along with HD, would I need 3 cables?

Therefore I should run 4 and be done with it?

    Thanks for advice so far.

The SKY installer will supply a quad LNB (4 cable outlets) in any case. Your old SKY box only had one tuner, so it needed only one cable. SKY+ or SKY HD boxes have two tuners so that you can watch one programme while recording another (or watch something you've already recorded while recording two programmes at once). It's the steady march of technology...

It's up to you whether you want the second cable installed for your HD, but I reckon it's worth having the flexibility. When we got SKY+ originally, it was the greatest thing since the sliced pan. I wouldn't be without the ability to pause the action, make a cup of tea and then skip through the ads afterwards!

Whether the programme content etc. is worth the dough is another point!

I may not have covered your question properly in my previous post. The quad LNB has four outlets, so you could run four cables from it. This would feed four old SKY boxes or FTA receivers or two SKY+ or SKY HD boxes with full dual-tuner functionality.

Thanks for that. That was really my original question (badly phrased). I wanted to know if multiple cables were required for multiple lnbs etc. You answered for me. Thanks.

If you have an existing aerial run as well as the existing satellite run then you can make it work with two of the things from satellite.ie for combining the two and then splitting them again in the sitting room.

Then when you get around to remodelling, you can put in the extra cable (or 4 - future proof!!!!)

You will of course use decent quality CT100 or equivalent cable?
