I was reading a thread phantom posted in the 2+2 thread yesterday about a poker player in Thailand. Apparently its illegal to bet on the internet in Thailand so they block access to poker sites. People get around this using a proxy server but i always taught that a proxy server that makes it look like its coming from somewhere else and you just type the website address sat www.fulltiltpoker.com into it and it loads the page.

But all of the poker sites are applications so there not loaded in a browser. Is there a different type of proxy server for this? and how does it work. Have half a taught of going over there so was just wondering whats involved if i was to play a bit of poker while i was over there

A proxy server is basically a server which acts as a gateway to the internet to your PC.
In places like UCD you'll find that although the proxy server blocks access to the sites even if you were able to open the access the poker software wouldnt work. (The system admin there could unblock the sites in seconds)
This is due to the fact that organisations have items called "firewalls". These firewalls only permit certain traffic from your PC. In order to get this to work you would have to find out which "port" needs to be opened on the firewall to get this to work. Once opened you'll be able to play poker.
    PC-Proxy-Firewall
In reality get some blackmail material on the system administrator there or simply bribe the kunt until he sorts out your poker access.
(Dont pay the fcuker until you've downloaded and tested it)

See I know of some physical connection ports which arent firewalld and am able to play poker there. BUT I lived on campus last year and wireless was what I used to surf the net. Obviously this didn't work to play poker.

Is there a way to enable a certain PC to play poker i.e. mine? Or will letting the poker traffic through the firewall enable all PC's to play poker?

I don't understand why they have it blocked anyway

So in the case of where im the admin and i dont have to worry about a firewall do i buy proxy server software and install it on my pc and is it expensive and lastly can you change the settings to say make it think the page or software is being accessed from a particular country? Also would it be a resource hog?

There is a freeware proxys out there you can get. Quite frankly though what you're trying to do is possible, but I wouldnt know how to do it. People who know how to do this kind of thing woulnt be too bothered playing poker me thinks !

Well the way i described it is probably the hard way re-routing it so it looks like im accessing from x or y country, ive heard a good few poker players that use a proxy so they can get access to not just poker sites but a wide variety of gambling/banned sites as the Thai's are very strict on what you can access, ive also heard Bulgaria blocks you from accessing poker sites, i think theyve a similar setup to the US where they dont want money being invested in online poker as it will take away from the poker business in the country. Im sure with a bit of googling ill find out, thanks anyway for the help

google mobile ip and see if there are any implementations of it around, that will encapsulate IP traffic and redirect it to your home computer/agent who will then communicate with the destination.

otherwise you could try vpn or whatever thats called, where you can log in remotely to your desktop.

Thanks Sikes, i wont pretend i understand what that means but ill try googling it:p , trouble with the remote desktop is it can cause lagging and crashing and thats obviously not ideal, well ive only tried the free www.logmein.com i suppose if you choose the pay version it might be alot more stable.

You could probably use http://www.realvnc.com/ . But your PC at home would have to be on constantly, also I'm going to speculate that Thailand hasn't got the greatest internet infrastructure so playing would probably only infuriate you! You could always buyin to some backalley game....

When I was in college, they had all ports except 80 blocked so couldn't play paddy power poker on the laptop with wireless. But I downloaded this [http://www.proxifier.com/download.htm] that you install on your laptop and it takes all traffic on weird ports on routes it through 80. It worked.

I've used a VPN to play in certain countries that are blacklisted by the poker software. www.betsecure.net (thanks to Nick for that). Very reliable service.

As for Thailand, none of the poker sites were blocked when I was living there last year. Gambling is banned in Thailand apart from horse racing and government run lotteries, but I had no problem accessing Ipoker, FTP and Betfair when I was there...

As an aside, I'm currently viewing boards using my VPN because boards is banned here in China!

There are certain "proxy switchers" ( the hint is in the name....) that are available, eg. to watch ESPN from Ireland. They slow you down while connecting, but once you are in you can route through your normal one again. Not sure if it would be fast enough to play poker though.

Only right too... wouldn't want them finding out there was theory involved in poker!

As a matter of interest... is there any sign of the china allowing online poker ot be played? or is it actually banned?

What all you lads are looking for to connect your poker applications to a poker server is a "socks" proxy. Socks uses tcp which is a transport protocol .

If you have any questions just ask .

you would want to be fairly picky about whcih Proxy you choose. Would be the easiest thing in the world to set one up as a trap for poker accounts/passwords etc

I can get Stars to work in UCD with a small edit to its user.ini file if anyone wants it.
