Lotto blues

I don't usually play the Lotto but the large sign in the newsagent advertising last Saturday's jackpot of €7.5 million tempted me. So I bought €8 quick pick and left the ticket on my desk at work. Just a minute ago I checked the ticket and found that I have 5 numbers!!!

Let me tell you that winning five numbers is the worst feeling of all.

Can you send the winnings of 1163 euro to Muppetkillers Galway Races fund please if you don't want it :D

Very pessimistic & negative attitude there OP, you should be delighted.
    How much did you win?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,537 ✭✭✭Gyalist

€1163 according to the Lotto website. Haven't collected it yet but I'm off to the post office on my lunch break.

I'm delighted that I won but the feeling of being so near and yet so far has put a bit of a dampener on things. I hadn't realised that the jackpot hadn't been won so I was counting my chickens before they were hatched. I had plans of just walking out of work never to return!!1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,423 ✭✭✭fletch

I would be crushed also! Sorry I know that doesn't help. I don't think it's a very pessimistic attitude, of course you're going to be sick that one more number and you could have been €7 million+ richer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,200 ✭✭✭muppetkiller

ya it's a pisser alright .. 1 more number for a completely different life ...no more work and 7.5 million euro !!! that would depress me too

don't be so retarded, you won some cash, be happy, do you actually think the odds between getting 5 numbers and 6 numbers are close? Cause it's just one number?

Poor you, all your hopes and dreams are ruined.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,986 ✭✭✭✭mikemac

Don't feel down OP. Tbh if you knew before you entered that you'd get 5 numbers you'd have been delighted so no point complaining now.

Your post office mightn't be able to cash the ticket, unless it's a main post office for a decent size town. I wouldn't expect a small village post office to have that kind of cash on hand.

Depressed that you won over a grand on something the first time you do it? Eh!?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,270 ✭✭✭singingstranger

The odds of getting all six numbers are 37 times higher than getting five. Sure, one more number could have won you millions - but one less number would have brought in €39...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,537 ✭✭✭Gyalist

I'm OK now. It was just the initial "what could have been" feeling. Depressed was probably the wrong choice of word. It's more like disappointed.
No doubt the new dSLR than I plan to buy will go a long way towards restoring my eqilibrium.

I'm in south Dublin city centre. They should be able to cash it.

Ah that's gay, unlucky buddy. I'd feel exactly the same way tbh.

    Anyway, enjoy the grand! :)

    You think you're bad!!!!!
I'd only 6 more numbers to get!
    Now, that IS a b!tch!!! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,537 ✭✭✭Gyalist

I got the first 4 numbers in sequence so I guess I got a tad carried away.

I don't think I'll be playing this Wednesday on the grounds that lightning couldn't possibly strike twice.

Anyone who thinks getting 5 numbers is 'unlucky' is a mental midget.

I am extremely delighted but it's hard to resist thinking "what if the machine had chosen 42 instead of 20?"

one of the reasons why I only do quick picks.

No offence but this reminds me of that video of a girl that gets a sports car as a birthday gift and then she starts crying "It's blue, I wanted a red one". I think it may have been a viral or such. :D

I feel your pain OP. Previously I also got 5 numbers, the only good thing was is that I saw the draw and the first number out wasn't mine.

A friend of mine (a 5 number winner on a different occasion) was watching the draw and the first 5 were his, he was a lot more gutted than I ever was.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 500 ✭✭✭Ya-Boy-Ya

    He's hooked now. :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,088 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

In fairness to the OP, I can see where they're coming from.

The prizes for 5 numbers are very poor. Should be something like €100,000.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,909 ✭✭✭✭Wertz

Sick for you. The 5 no. prizes are a f*ckin' joke. I'd feel like ripping that ticket up if I were in your shoes although I probably wouldn't...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 165 ✭✭cmoney

Does th OP realise that he was infact 2 numbers away from the jackpot and not 1. You need 6 AND the bonus to win it NOT just 6. :p and yet he's still complaining.... (well at least i taught ya needed the bonus but maybe not)

i had sligo dublin kerry and monaghan to win there respective provincial titles from last may.... the only thing that let me down was monaghan by ONLY a miniscuel 2 points but i got over that quick enough. i wasnt set to win 7.5 million but still dont have much sympathy to be honest.

The lotto is a tax on people who suck at maths.

You only need 6 numbers for the jackpot (not the bonus)

I do tend to think that the Lotto is a tax on those who need it most though because they are, in my experience, the ones who play religiously every week and spend a fortune doing it.

Better odds on the horses anyway I think :)

When you talk about lotto winnings etc, I had to do out 14 bank drafts to the members of a syndicate who won 25k on this weekends lotto

That's only €1785 each though. It's nice, but not THAT much really!

Here in work, we have a Euromillions syndicate with about 15 people in it and it's going for about 6 months now. No big wins yet.:(

But we got an email from management saying that the syndicate is to be stopped as it's a "business risk". The idea being that 15 people would most likely quit/walk out if we got a big win and that's over half the department so there'd be chaos.
I can see their point and I'm not sure if we're going to keep going or shut it down.

    Anyone else see this before?

Sorry if I'm hijacking OP, your questions have all been answered now.

Stepbar, I'd be definitly looking for a tip for what you did.:)

That's a new one. Unless the company is sponsoring it as well or something I'd think they have no say in the matter.

I mean, what can they do if you take the syndicate "private"?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,723 ✭✭✭empirix

Man i would be depressed too, €1200 for getting 5 numbers is a piss take in fairness, should get a nice little wad of cash for that - unlucky my man!

That's awful pettiness on managements part  Keep it going in spite. Just open up a bank a/c and get everyone contributing on standing order. All done on the QT

Yeah well, I got 3 numbers and all I win is a crummy 1 Euro scratchcard. Swapsies? But yeah, 5 numbers and 1 grand is a load of balls. (hehe scuse the pun)

When I read this thread, I raced upstairs to get my lotto ticket (First time I played, wasn't even bothered to see if I won or not).

    I didn't win.

    :(

€140 from 2 lines in the same draw, but that's the most.
Mind you, it was a couple of days before christmas, so it was a good time to win it.
