Hi, I was hoping that the brains trust on here would be able to help me. Got my laptop back from my brother complete with spyware messages and pop-ups. I've tried to fix this myself using ad-aware and kaspersky's but i cant get rid of it. I know that these can be tricky but have been amazed at the help given on the forum. If someone could do this for me, it would be greatly appreciated. I've run the HijackThis scan, as seems to be the starting point for getting rid of the problem. I hope its not terminal, but if needs be, I will reformat, as it is arelatively new laptop. Many thanks.

At a guess I'd be suspicious of

    Video ActiveX Access\iesmin.exe

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,757 ✭✭✭8T8

Also anything related to "My Web Search" get rid of, also BAE.dll entry is also suspect as Google says it can be a virus but also part of Google error logging, get rid of it either way just to be safe.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,970 ✭✭✭ActorSeeksJob

BAE.dll is part of google like you said 8T8 so shouldn't be touched. Do this OP

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Now we need to reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Double-click the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
    • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

    1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):

    2. Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

    3. Reboot into Safe Mode by continuously tapping the F8 key as soon as the computer begins to boot. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

    4. Please click on Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs(if present):

    MyWebSearch
    Video ActiveX Access
    DriveCleaner Free

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

    5. Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these folders in bold (if present):

    C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch
    C:\Program Files\Video ActiveX Access
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\DriveCleaner Free

    Then reboot your PC.

Click here to use the F-Secure Online Scanner
    • Then click the Start Scanning button below.
    • You should get a notification (bar on top) to install the activeX. Click on it and select to install the ActiveX.
    • Once the ActiveX is installed, you should accept the License terms by clicking OK below to start the scan.
    • In case you are having problems with installing the ActiveX/starting the scan, please read here.
    • Click the Full System Scan button.
    • It will start to download scanner components and databases. This can take a while.
    • The main scan will start.
    • Once the scan finished scanning, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button
    • It could be possible that your firewall gives an alert - allow it, because that's a connection you establish to submit infected files to F-Secure.
    • The cleaning can take a while, so please be patient.
    • Then click the Show report button and copy and paste what's present under results in your next reply.

When you are finished, please reboot the computer normally, and post the SmitfraudFix report, the F-Secure Online Scanner report, and a new HijackThis log here in a reply. Also, please let me know of any problems you may have encountered.

    Sorry about skipping the step.

I posted the smitfraudfix report about.

I then tried to remove the programs from Add/Remove Program - of the three listed only Mywebsearch was present. I tried to delete this but I got an error message saying "Error Loading C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bar\mwsbar.dll has been removed.

As its a pretty new Dell machine, which came with stuff on it. I am not sure if the Search Assistant and URL assistant are valid programs that I should have - i'm guessing that they might help browsing, but not certain.

I removed the Drivecleaner and MyWebsearch folders from the Program Files folder.

Then I ran the F-Secure scanner. Here is the report

    We are nearly done.

Run HijackThis, click "Do a system scan only" and check these entries

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SDR6_Check] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\DriveCleaner Free\udcsdr.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PAS_Check] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\DriveCleaner Free\udcpas.exe"

close all windows except for HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

    Delete this folder if present

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\DriveCleaner Free

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
    Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
    Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

So in your next reply please post the following : a new HijackThis log, the HijackThis Uninstall List, and tell me how your PC is running and if you have any problems.

PC appears to be running fine. No noticeable difference in performance. And I havent received the notices from Kaspersky or from Windows of the presence of Spyware. Thanks again.

    Ok we practically done now.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Remove

    My Web Search (Popular Screensavers)
    SearchAssist

You now need to update your Java and remove your older versions.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

    * Click Start > Control Panel.
    * Click Add/Remove Programs.
    * Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.
    * Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), and install it to your computer from
    here

Now we need to reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:
Double-click the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading un-select "Show hidden files and folders".
Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Check the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Now we need to create a new System Restore point.

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

    %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

    cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

    * Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

    * To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:
    SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all

    * SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

    * I recommend the following anti-spyware programs to protect yourself against spyware, make sure you only use one real-time anti-spyware protection program though :
    AVG anti-spyware
    SUPERAntiSpyware
    Spybot - Search and Destroy

    * Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
    Here

    * Some good free firewalls are ZoneAlarm, Comodo, or
    Outpost
Make sure you only use one firewall though. A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

    * Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
    Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

thanks for the recommendations again, and after this experience I will take note. However, when I try to delete Mywebsearch from Add/remove programs, I get an error message saying
"Error loading C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bar\mwsbar.dll". The specified module cannot be found.

So what should I do? Should I continue with the steps you outlined or is there something else I need to do?

Many thanks again for the help

Continue with the steps, once you have done them all then do the following

Delete an Entry from the Uninstall List
    * Open HiJackThis
    * Click on the "Config..." button on the bottom right
    * Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
    * Click on the Box that says "Uninstall Manager"
    * Click My Web Search (Popular Screensavers)
    * Click on Delete this entry
    * Click SearchAssist
    * Click on Delete this entry
    * Click "Yes"

That should sort out that problem.
