I have decided I want to program an interesting project for free. My ulterior motives are that I want the experience so that [cool software company] will hire me some day.

I am hoping that somebody in this community will either take me under their wing or at least point me in a good direction.

I have a degree in applied computational linguistics, and so I am particularly good at synthesis/recognition, machine translation, question answering, AI, etc. I am, however, prepared to work on any project which seems genuinely interesting.

I have studied Java, Perl, Prolog and CLIPS, and I have a working knowledge of Python, PHP and Javascript. I am prepared to learn any other languages.
, and it won't take me long to do so.

If anybody can point me towards a project to which I am capable of making a valuable contribution, I will be most grateful.

    You have two things!

    - You can build project and upload at source-forge so that others can see your work
    - You can take part in free-lance web sites and show your work
