Well John to John Duddy, done Ireland proud tonite.:)

    Duddy delivers on Irish return
    watch Saturday, 14 July 2007 23:40

Derry-born middleweight John Duddy overcame a spirited battle from Italy's Alessio Furlan in Dublin on Saturday night.

Duddy, who is based in New York, stopped Furlan with less than 20 seconds to go of their ten-round bout at the National Stadium.

The fight was Duddy's first professional contest on Irish soil.

Afterwards Duddy said he was pleased with his performance and said he was delighted to be home: 'Irish boxing is thriving at the moment and I'm just proud to be part of it,' he said.

The 28-year-old Ulsterman, who has clocked up 20 consecutive wins in the US, was given an awkward time by Furlan, who kept a very tight defence throughout the fight.

But Furlan never really had enough power to seriously worry Duddy, and a sharp upper-cut from the Derryman as the closing bell loomed put an end to Furlan's gallantry.

off topic but does anyone know the name of the Arcade fire song on the tre promo ad for the duddy fight?

on the fight itself i thought it was a great contest by two equally matched fighters. ill back duddy all the way as he is a crowd pleaser. He's like a real attacking soccer team that are not to good at the back

That's not the point, someone could be checking the forum for something else and they may not have seen the fight, posting the result could ruin their enjoyment of it.

    I didn't say "DON'T POST RESULTS" did I?

I said don't post results in the thread titles.

It's frowned upon in the other sports forums and I frown upon it here. I was looking forward to seeing the fight as I had other commitments tonight, but coming here and reading the thread title has ruined it for me.

i can see duddy being stopped due to cuts in the future if not from a clean knockout. He has shown in this fight that he will be exposed against the top guys in the division.

entertaining fight and fair play to furlan for been a gutsy opponent-irish boxing is definetly on the up..

Sorry to let the air out of the balloon. But another poor performance from Duddy against poor opposition. He just gets hit far too easy and against that type of opposition he should be finishing those fights alot earlier.

John Duddy is not a world champion.

have to agree. the more i see Duddy and his insane lack of defence the more he reminds me of a bigger, paler Arturo Gatti.

An incredibly exciting fighter to watch. loads of heart. will generate a die hard loyal following. but wont quite get to the top due to the punishment he takes.

    :p

He had a chance to fight Taylor some time ago but based on this performance he was wise not to take it. We are clouded because he is one of our own but i just don't think he is good enough defensively to be a world champion. He is hit far too often in fights against guys who are average fighters. Imagine what serious opposition will do to him.

Cowzerp, He hasn't fought for a world title because he has to wait for his shot. Based on past performance he's not good enough to win a world title.

He's still hasnt had a go at the European title. World title fight is a long way away.

In my opinion when he makes a serious step up in class he'll get knocked out.
I hope he makes enough money out of boxing to live comfortably before this happens because he seems like a great guy. There are people behind him making money I feel.

I have the same suspicions as Johnathan on that one. There's no money in boxing unless your winning titles. I'd be very susprised if Duddy is getting much out of it.
