    Hi all,

Ive been trying to find some sort of MA to do for fitness levels.

I seem to be veering towards kick boxing for the last 10 years and this is the year I am actually going to act on it. Would ye advise differently?

Does anyone know of any instructors/clubs in laois/offaly. Am I mad to even consider a MA at the tender age of 29?

    All advise greatly appreciated!!

    Many thanks

    Do it.
I started at 32. You will have a ball. You should try out a few clubs but Kickboxing would be excellent to start off with.

Cheers. My whole attitude this year is to just go for it, regardless what it is and this is the next thing on my list. Not just need help to make sure I go the right way about it.

    Hi boo!
I started in KB and later moved to TKD. Both were grand for fitness. I instruct part-time at a dojang and we have new students ranging in age from young children to a few in their 50's. It's never too late to start, so just do it!

    Hi again
I'm trying to find someone local that instructs and have heard rumours about one person but trying to get feelers out and contact numbers. Could end up travelling yet which I am willing to do at this stage.

Being naive and a bit thick this Sunday night can someone give me the low down on all the abbreviations please.

    thanks:D

    MA- Martial arts
    MMA- Mixed martial arts
    BJJ Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
    KB- Kickboxing
    TKD- Taekwondo

and lots more. If you're more specific someone could probably answer better.

There is a Kenpo Karate club in Portlaoise and 3 others scattered throughout Offaly (Banagher, Birr and Tullamore). PM me if you want the contact details of the clubs. Kenpo is similar to a traditional Japanese style of Karate with an emphasis on puncing and blocking with kicks and some wrist and armlocks. It was modernised and made famous by Ed Parker, an MA legend who thought Bruce Lee and Dan Inosanto an awful lot about the martial arts. I am training in it nearly 6 years and I love it. It is never to late to start, in my club there are new practitioners in there 40's and 50's so its never to late to start. Other styles are good as well. I am speaking from my experience in this particular art.

    Good luck in your search.

    Paul.

29 is young.... get rid of the "old man attitude!!!"

I am training men in their 65s up in Krav Maga over here in Thailand. Some of them are (given their age, and worn out joints etc) mad into it.
Many in their day, were formidable men, have seen a lot of very hands on fighting in when in Vietnam war. Now they want to refresh a wee bit of self defense for confidence and fun.

My own kickboxing teacher I was under for over 20 years on and off, is 70, still in box splits, still spars and has the most powerful foot sweep when you spar, literally can send you 6 feet into air where you come crashing head first onto floor, can still feet sweep that powerful.
He did not start any Martial Arts at all until he was 28 ish... that was in early 60s when "kratty' first emerged in ireland.

    see him do splits http://www.worldmugendouniversity.com

Thanks guys. I'm trying to get rid of the old "woman" attitude and so far not doing too badly. Have 3 kids under my belt so according to my oldest I'm one of the "old folk!"
Restarting my life now, currently doing fitness instructor course, am qualified to teach exercise to children since June and as of last Sat am registered boxercise instructor. Hoping to specialise in circuits at some stage. Busy but I want to do something for my own fitness. Was looking into Krav Maga for while but keep reverting back to first interest.

    Thanks Paul
