Saves having to fork out €1500 every few months or so if the "cheaper" versions dont stack up to the abuse!!

How about a Dell Latitude ATG?
Comes in under budget and that's without a Dell discount... :)

I would recomend the Panasonic Toughbook any day. It costs a bit more but as they say the right tool for the job.
Have a Toughbook T34 now for the past few years and have taken it apart for upgrades and it's not just tough on the outside.

Meets [edit] SOME [/edit] Military Standards (MIL-STD 810F)
In independent third party testing, the Dell ATG met MIL-STD 810F standards for vibration (Method 514, Proc I, Cat. 20 & 24), humidity (Method 507.4), and Altitude (Method 500.4 Low Pressure, Proc. I; Operational up to 10k feet). For dust, the ATG met MIL-STD 810F standards (Method 510.4, Proc. I) for all D-module options (2nd HDD, 2nd battery, Air Bay) except optical drives.

    Vibration
The Vibration shall be performed in accordance with MIL-STD-810F, Method 514, Procedure I, Category 24 (Minimum Integrity Test) for the non-operational condition and Category 20 (Ground Vehicles) for the operational condition. The unit should be clamped to an aluminum plate (approximating rigid mounting), and subjects to the following levels of

Water Resistance (not on the DELL)
The Water Resistance test was performed in accordance with MIL-STD-810F, Method 506.4, Procedure III (Drip). The test items were subjected to this test with the LCD open and the unit operating, but with ports closed. The Toughbooks were opened following testing to inspect for water intrusion.

If you are looking for toughness - get a second hand panasonic and put a new hard drive in it - several uk sites selling them on. It won't be fast so no use for home.

if you want a fast laptop for home, it will be too delicate for site
