Wedding guest turns up a year early

    A d'oh moment!:D
Teacher Dave Barclay flew thousands of miles across the Atlantic to Wales to attend his friend's wedding, only to discover he was a year early.

Barclay, 34, was told about the wedding earlier in the year and assumed it was to take place in 2007.

It was only when he had flown into Cardiff from Toronto, Canada, and rang the bridegroom seeking details of the venue that he discovered the wedding was in 2008.

"I am a year early -- yeah, my mates are loving it, aren't they," he told BBC Radio Wales.

The groom, Dave Best, had emailed his friend at the start of the year.

"He just said July the 6th and I assumed it was this year because if you tell the guy July 6th, they're going to think it's this year," Barclay said.

Barclay, who has been teaching in Toronto for three years spent 500 pounds ($1,015) on his premature flight.

"At least it's assured me a mention in the speech next year," he added.

    Neither do I.

I took a preliminary booking for a wedding (as photographer) and was told "yep, the ## of September, in this hotel"... It wasn't until a few weeks later they remembered to tell me it was '08 and not a very late preliminary booking for '07. :)

I presume "start of the year" means January.
If a friends mails me in January and says "I'm getting married in July" I would think he meant in 6 months time, not 18 months time.

Yeah, but wouldn't you have some sort of contact with some of the people going to the wedding.

"Looking forward to X's wedding in a couple of months"

"No, it's on the next year"

    "Oh right"

that's what i was thinking. How, at no stage, did he end up talking to anyone about it?

A tad embarrassing but I would hardly call the guy an idiot. I probably would have thought it was this year as well but I would have rang someone to make sure if I got the invitation really close as people generally organise weddings ages in advance.

Personally I think people should be able and willing to change their mind.

Maybe 'yore ma' teabags my sac, maybe.

I have a confession to make.

i did precisely this a year or two ago, bar that the wedding was in Cavan, we were in Cork, and arrived a week early.

In my defence, I hadn't received a written invite, but word of mouth from a FOAF, whom I spoke to a few times in general terms about the nuptials etc.

Once I realised the error, we made a weekend of it, luckily the hotel had a couple of free rooms.

The following week, the groom presented us with a calendar while making his speech.

Slightly embaressing, but that's what life is all about.
