    Hi
I've been traveling for the past year and have just returned to Dublin. I'm living in the Tallaght / Firhouse area an am interested in taking up a martial art (I'm not sure which one). Can anyone give me any suggestions?

There are two active posters on this forum that have clubs in your area. The first is silat_liam who has a Cimande Silat club. The website can be found here: http://www.silateurope.com/new/ I think they train Mondays and Wednesdays at 7.30-8.30 in Firhouse. I'm not too sure what Silat actually is and obviously haven't trained with Liam so I cannot recommend it.

Colm O'reilly has a MMA/submission wrestling club in Firhouse too (Scoil Carmel). The training is on at 7.30-8.45 on mondays and wednesdays (edited)too. Here is the website http://spartanmma.com/. I've trained in this club and I would recommend anyone that lives in the area to try it out, Colm is a good coach. He teaches mainly grappling (wrestling) with an eye to submissions and applications to mma. You're much better off trying it out yourself, you can find colm's contact details on the site.

Thanks a mill for your reply, I had a quick look at the sites and through this forum I've heard a lot of good things about Colm's club. Do many girls do MMA?

There are a couple. A couple of girls here do mma and post on this forum so they may have more specific advice. Usually mma clubs are 90% male in my experience. Girls are very welcome of course, there just isn't that many doing it. Would it be a problem for you if you were the only girl in the club?

    Sarah,

Your more than welcome to bring a friend! :) MMA is pretty male dominated - mainly I'd say because it delivers quite the adrenaline hit.

But there's been some fantastic female grapplers in this country so far and Aisling Daly is making a name for herself in MMA in Europe.

If you've any specific questions please feel free to email me or ask here.

    Colm

There are some Kenpo Karate clubs in the area. Not sure of where they are though. There is one near Tymon park, not sure where though.

Thanks for your help guys :) I really appreciate all your advice and suggestions, there are quite a few options so I'll have to have a think about which one to go for.

yes three castles and spartan mma are both very good. very similar clubs so you can't go wrong if you go to either. Get one of your sporty friends to come down with you if that makes it easier. Let us know how you get on.

Sarah, if it's any use I can recommend a Karate club in Ballyroan. I used to train there and I can tell you it's a very good place to learn.

There's a great club / school in Templogue. www.ugek.net. They run 1-1 master classes and also school / class nights once a week.

Highly recommended. It's Kenpo BTW :)
