Media Server

    Hi Guys,

I was wondering if anyone here could recommend hardware for a media server on a budget. I would ideally like to have something that would be quiet, would have RAID 1 and has very low power usage.

I have a normal PC with Im migrating away from to a newly bought Mac Mini (I got it cheap). The Mac Mini is almost ideal apart from a small HDD and the fact that it has no RAID array nor do any of the form fitting add-ons (RAID is a priority as Ive already suffered a head crash and a total loss of all my data)

The server really just needs to be able to run the likes of bitTorrent and serve up media, maybe run a web server and a few other bits and bobs as my I become less of n00b with Linux. I know there are NAS drives out there that have bitTorrent built in but from what Ive read the clients are pretty crap and so far I haven't found one that supports RAID.

    Any ideas or suggestions welcome.

    Dave

Ah, you are thinking along the same lines I did when I was first setting up a HTPC for my parents.

RAID1 isn't needed. What if you get a virus or the OS corrupts? RAID1 only protects you against hardware failure, which is one of the LAST causes of data loss, usually corruption, virii, accidental formating/deleting are the most common.

I'd recommend just getting a larger HDD for your Mac mini, then investing €100 in an external HDD for backup.

If you want to go really cheap, a PII with 256MB RAM will be fine. Stick clarkconnect community edition on there for your file/web/vpn/ftp/email server and torrentflux for torrents. All you need is a modern PCI card for your bigger drives. If you have any experience with linux at all, clarkconnect will be an absolute breeze.

If you want to save on juice you could get a mobo from from mini-itx.com. The power saving might be marginal as you will have a few HD's in there.

Most important thing is to have a good case with good airflow, ensure that the HD temps stay reasonably low. Aim for a HDA temp of 40DegC or lower.

RAID wise, if you feel you need RAID 1 then go for it. But only if you have a backup policy in place. Personally I run LVM for media and backup my critical data.
