    Howdie Folks,

Its my bi-annual body upgrade time !

As some of you may or may not know, I've been shooting with a 350D for the last three years and believe its finally time to upgrade. Please bare this in mind, I'm a poverty spec student, I don't have much moola to blow on this.

I've been looking at getting a 30D with Grip for around €1000 new from OneStop, 7DayShop or WarehouseExpress. Is it worth the upgrade from the 350D ? I know the difference in features, but its still nagging me that I'll have the same resolution images. The 5 fps sounds cool, I want 1.6x crop or at least crop of some kind. I was thinking of holding onto the 350D to use a second body at each Prodrift event, equipt the 30D with 70-200 & 350D with 24-70 and flash ...

It's either buy this or finally redecorate the office !

It's only a couple of months to the autumn upgrade shenanigans.

I'd wait till then and see what happens and if nothing then the 30D is a fine buy. Pixels are only of big relevance when your printing big.

Dont forget that you would need at least a jump to 12 mp and a full size sensor to notice any difference , or in a nutshell , the 5D .... the jump to 10mp on the 400D made not a jot of difference to the final pictures , with some reviewers actually rating the 8mp of the 350D better quality. ( Source for that is dpreview)

The 30D is excellent ,the handling alone is streets ahead of the 350D and the spot metering is a massive improvement ( for me anyway ).

I would agree the 30D is a great step up even for high ISO handling and spot meter and increased ISO steps.

Rumours about of a 40D coming out soon, but you could be waiting a week or a year at the end of the day. The 30D is a grand camera, much more solid than the 350. Better fps... you know yourself.

Plus it means you'll keep your use of your brand new 10-20!!

Thats a definite plus Fajitas. 5 fps is very handy.

Been keeping a close eye on these too as of late because I am wondering whether to upgrade to the 30D. Looks like we should know soon enough if there is a 40D. The rumours don't mention too much of a difference between the 30D and 40D, an upgrade in megapixels being the main thing. If a 40D came out I personally will try get a 30D on sale.

I think the 30D would be a very good upgrade from the 350D for many reasons.

Try one and see what you think.

Hard one to call, most of the big names announce their new kit at either the PMA in March or Photokina in Sept. Bearing in mind PMA is 8 months away and Photokina happens only every two years, and the next one is Sept 2008.....you could be waiting.
That said the 20/30D is due an upgrade. And to be honest you make money from your photography, so it's not like any camera you buy will be sitting there slowly depreciating while not earning you a cent.

Whatever you do, keep the 350D. A back up body is essential for paid jobs. You basically have to think "where's my redundancy" everytime you pitch to a job. i.e......your CF card croaks...do you have another? Your flash goes....do you have another...your 30D goes....do you have another camera to continue shooting with?

I have the 20D + grip, so if you want to get somewhat of a feel for how the 30D would handle (differences aside) just let me know.

Was up in the big schmoke today and got my hands on one in Jessops. Have to say, it feels & shoots like a different animal altogether. The guy in Jessops let me try my own lenses on it, really cool guys working there, ordering it from One-Stop tomorrow :)
