New Sky User - proposed set-up

    Hi,

Apologies if this topic is covered in other areas. I've gone through the stickies, but can't find what I'm looking for

Essentially, I'm just in the process of signing up for SKY. I received the welcome letter stating that I'm signing up for 12month period (no problem), and that the phone line has to be connected for 12months.

We're presently with Chorus Digital, which doesn't require any phoneline. My question is - do I need the phoneline connected to have service for Sky (don't care about interactive services) - can I pull it out, or is it required for service.

I contacted SKY about this, who said that in order to have a card that is not phone-enabled, I would have to pay an extra €37.50 - which seems a bit rich to me.

Secondly, I have an existing old Sky digibox (got it from a friend of mine emigrating), which I want to put in another room for FTA channels only. Can I ask the installer to run a second cable into this box, so that I can just get FTA.

All replies much appreciated, including any suggestions on what I should do.

If you have internet access in your home, you could use VoIP and an ATA, and in theory, with the correct codec in use, this should work fine for you and avoid you paying Sky €37.50 for a no phone line job.

On the other hand, if you don't already have the setup / equipment above, it's probably not worth your while. In that case, I'd say you'd be best off paying the €37.50.

Regarding your spare digibox, whether or not the installer would be willing to run another line to another room for you, is, I'd say, between you and him. He wouldn't be paid by Sky for the extra work, that's for sure. :)
