VRO Cork

    Hi,

Just a little story about my experiences with our good friends in the VRO in Cork City.

I went in on Tuesday to re-register my Golf Convertible. I had finally decided to bite the bullet and get the thing road legal. I had rang them a few weeks ago to get a quote for the VRT. I had asked them what methods of payment they accept, and it was confirmed to me that cash was accepted. I had forgotten the exact amount of VRT to pay, so i rang them again on Tuesday morning, just to check, so that i'd know how much money i had to take with me. I was quoted €1,612. Got the money out and went to the VRO.

There I was told that they don't take cash! When i said that i was told only a few weeks ago that they do accept cash, she said: "oh well that all changed a couple of weeks ago!". When i asked them what methods of payment they do accept, i was given 4 options: bank draft, postal order, cheque or laser card. I didn't have my cheque book with me, so i decided to go back to the bank, put the money back in my account and pay by Laser. Went back into the VRO, where this time i was told i couldn't pay with Laser because the amount was over the €1500 limit they have on laser transactions. When i asked where on the sign it said anything about a limit, she said: "oh well, this sign is wrong!". She ripped it off in front of me and told me to get a bank draft, which i subsequently did.

One of their staff (a supervisor of some sort i guess) came up to me and asked me out loud, in front of all the people waiting: "I believe you have a problem paying the money!", to which i blew a gasket or two and told them that they were the ones having the problems accepting the payment.

I realise that they are the government and that they have the right to f*ck people about (that right appears to be God given...), but i thought their attitude was.. well... public-service-like!

So, if any of you have to re-register a car in the near future, don't take cash and if the VRT is higher than €1,500, don't rely on Laser either!
    Be warned!:D

Laser has a transaction limit, it has nothing to do with the VRO. The shift from cash was ushered in along with the need to give a PPS number when importing a car. All a bit Big Brother as far as I'm concerned!

I realise that there's a transaction limit on Laser, but when i was quoted €1612 VRT, would it have killed them to mention that limit? I only found out about that limit when i asked Bank of Ireland. I do not spend that kind of money on a daily basis, you know ;)

Civil servants.. let's not go there! :D

They'd go bust in no time!

I'm actually thinking of not dealing with the VRO anymore. I'm going to take my business elsewhere! Any suggestions?

    :)

I've paid cash twice to the VRO in Kilkenny,it was fifty euros each time, maybe theres a limit?

No, they told me that they can't take cash anymore in any of the VRO offices. This all changed a few weeks ago apparently, and now you can't pay cash, even if it is only €50.00.

ya should never have been able to pay cash anyway but thats a moot point.

how dare they call your character into question in public, I'd have blown my top

i did blow a few gaskets alright, but i kept my temper, because i'm going to have to go back in a while to re-register another car... but don't worry, they have a complaints procedure and i'll be using it!!!

I think you handled the situation really well 2cv:)

It is not the policies that are at fault it is the non-advertisement of the said policies and the way in which the staff dealt with this:rolleyes:

Anyway, you have the golf cabrio on the road now!!!!!! Any pics?:D

Well I know Tallaght VRO has signs up about the €1500 limit on Laser, payment methods, no cash taken, and the need for a PPS number. May be the news to put posters up to tell people of the changes hasn't reached Cork yet?

But then I filled out a transfer of residence form and half a ream of photocopied documents, just to save €50 VRT on principle. :D
