if someone calls in sick ,do they have to call in the next day if they are still sick and not yet going back to work yet?

You should as a matter of courtesy. Some places will also require a doctors note.

It differs from one employer to annother. Strickly speaking, in most jobs you can't take two "sick days" in a row.

If you are not returning by the second day a MO's Certificate is usually required and then you are on "sick leave".

It is usually required that you telephone your employer the day prior to the day that you intend returning to work.

It probably depends on your employer. The info may be in your Terms and Conditions of employment which you are legally required to receive with two months of commencing work.

Really? Any of the jobs I've been in, you need a medical cert if you're sick only for a third day. Not sure how fussy they were after that - I've only called in sick twice in about 6 years...

Usually good practice to give them an idea when you might be coming back. At least ring them to say you won't be in on whatever day you aren't in.

In my experience "sick days" can only be taken in isolation.

For example, it is possible to take a sick day on a Monday, return on Tuesday and take another sick day on Wednesday. However, if one were to take Monday off as a sick day and then also ring in sick on the Tuesday, a Medical Certificate would then be required for both days.

The allocated paid sick days would remain intact. i.e., Monday would no longer be returned as a sick day but as a certified sick leave day).

In saying all that, i've only taken a couple of days in 20 years.

labour laws and company policy aside - would it not be common courtesy to let your employer know you're not coming in the second day if you've already missed a day?

(unless you told them on day one that you know you'll need at least 2 days to recover, or you have a doctor's cert or something). But other than that, I think it's only fair to ring in.

Anywhere I have worked you need a sick note if it is MORE than three days off in a row. You need to call in each day to let them know you wont be in though.

"Howya, not gonna be in today, feeling like crap."
"OK cool, will you be in tomorrow?"
"Dunno, probably not, I'll let you know."

That's how it usually goes for me. I may not ring the next day, I may just send an email that evening or the next morning.

I have in the past gotten a sick note for being off more than two days in a row, but in my place I don't have to clock in or out or otherwise account for my time, so no-one has ever asked me for one.

There is no law on this. Common courtesy (to your employer, your boss and your team) would dictate that you let them know for certain when you're not going to be in.

I'd love to send an e-mail to my employer but it would be lost in time and space. I'm talking about a staff administration department which still uses typewriters and has an open fire in the office. In saying that, I think it's great - where else would you get it. :D:D:D
