It's the best RTS since Age of Empires, possibly even better. Roll on Opposing forces!

  • Moderators Posts: 5,580 ✭✭✭Azza

Yup in my view its the best RTS out there at the moment. Luckly I sneaked into the closed beta of opposing fronts which start in the next week or 2. I'll let you know what my thoughts of it are.

I love this game, havent been able to play in six months. It wasn't an issue til I tripped across this thread, you bastards. :D

    what does the expansion contain?

  • Moderators Posts: 5,580 ✭✭✭Azza

Expansion contains 2 new factions. First up is the British and Canadians faction with 3 new doctrines, which are the Royal Commando's, Royal Engineers and royal Canadian Artillery. The emphasis with the British and Canadians is on defensive play. They can build trenches and have a mobile HQ as well as fortified mortar pits and anti aircraft guns. They have a whole batch of new tanks like the sherman firefly and cromwell tanks. They will also have greatly superior artillery to all other factions such as counter battery fire which targets enemy artillery that fires at you, The also have glider born commandos. They gain experience true the use of officers as opposed to combat or buying veterancy.

The Axis have the new Panzer Elite contaning 3 new doctrines which are Luftwaffe, scorched earth, and tank hunters. This faction is all about fast and hard hitting elite troops. They have panzer grenadiers as standard troops and fallschirmjager (paratroops), new untis include a mobile mortor vehicle, a half track that can be fired from by troops inside, anti tank aircraft like henschel hs 129 and last but not least ultra heavy german tanks the Jagd Panther and King Tiger or Tiger II, The germans will also apparently be quite adept at boobytraps and camoflauge.

The single player game is set during operation market garden and their is too campaigns a german and british/canadian one. Although shorter than the orginal campaign they are longer than it combined. You don't need to own the first coh to play this but you do need the first coh if you want to play the other 2 factions from the previous game (now know as the americans and wehrmacht),

Other features included weather than affects troop movement A greatly improved online system or so relic say. Arranged team matches and team mates will have ability to use their allies doctrine abilities.

As for getting into the beta I got in through a BTGN run tournament where they offered all participants beta keys once its complete on Saturday. Their is a second beta opportunity on gamereplays.org at the moment though I don't what it is.

COH is the dogs small bits. Pity the online community isnt as strong as Relics other smash hit; Dawn of War...

We play COH in mini lans every other week.

Play it online most nights , can be frustrating but it's a laugh with guys on ts .

Quick question, I keep reading in unit guides that there is an Axis vehicle called the StuH 42, now I know there are the StuGs, Panzers, Ostwinds, Half tracks and amoured cars, goliath, and tigers but I've never seen the StuH with apparant 105mm cannon.

    Where is it ? O_o

  • Moderators Posts: 5,580 ✭✭✭Azza

Yeah the Stuh 42 is only selectable from the blitzkreig doctrine ....second option on the left hand side of the tree costs 5 cps.

Its an off map unit that lucks very similar to the stug IV. Same chasis only the gun is a howitzer.

Better for killing infantry but poor against armour. Destroys buildings really quick but does little damage to units in buildings.

Hmnnn I bought Soldiers of WWII but I can't get it to play on Vista. I was thinking about CoH, but I'm not sure it'll run on my laptop:

    nVidia 8400GT
    2GB DDR-II 667Mhz
    Core 2 Duo T7100 (2Ghz)

Is it likely to run too slowly?

You need the Vista patch for it that removes the copy protection.

im sure everone has seen this interview

    http://www.gamespot.com/pages/gamespace/updates.php?page=1&pid=938946&sid=6171480&part=rss&subj=6171480

    i saw this line

"If Company of Heroes was the first step, Opposing Fronts is not the last. We have big plans for Company of Heroes. "

so what do you think the next step will be? afrika corps vs desert rats? or something on the eastern front?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,579 ✭✭✭BopNiblets

Yeah, I'd love to see the Russian army implemented, get some nice snow maps, like in Norway, Poland and Stalingrad.
Maybe even the eastern Asia theatre too later, lots of jungle battles!
