Stepaside is a small village with a large number of apartments and housing estate houses surrounding it. It's at the foothills of the mountains and a pretty area.

It's about 8km from Stepaside to Blackrock. There is no decent bus service (low frequency, super low quality of service/no-shows etc). It's ages away from the Luas so connections into town are also terrible. The Luas extension planned for 2010 will go within maybe 20 minutes walk of Stepaside.

It's busy at peak hours for driving around the M50 intersection, N11 intersection, and blackrock village is always busy. off peak it's fine.

If you want to live somewhere handy for getting to Blackrock, you'd be best choosing somewhere on the DART line or else get a little motorbike.

Blackrock itself is very nice. If you live in London you will find Stapaside very remote as there is little or nothing to do there other than a few pubs and a few village shops.

Blackrock is very expensive but reminds me of Ealing but with a beach! If you will be working walking distance from the Dart, then i would also suggest Greystones as well, it is a bit outside of Dublin, but is a very up and coming area and has a lot for kids.

I moved over from Maidenhead last year and did a lot of looking around, PM me if you want some advice.

    Blackrock is served by the DART and the following buses: 114 | 115 | 17 | 4 | 45 | 46e | 7 | 7a | 7n | 8 | http://www.dublinbus.ie/your_journey/viewer.asp?placeName=Blackrock

    "Stepaside" is serviced by the following routes : 118 | 44 | http://www.dublinbus.ie/your_journey/viewer.asp?placeName=Stepaside

So you are talking about a minimum of two buses.

There is a journey planner here http://www.dto.ie/web2006/jp.htm

    From: STEPASIDE PARK, STEPASIDE, DUBLIN
    To: Blackrock DART Station
    Distance: 7.894 km
    Time: 94minutes (walking)
    Time: 39minutes (cycling)

If you want to go out on the town at the weekend, taxis will cost an arm and a leg, although you could get a 44N/46N/48N Nitelink bus most of the way (4 euro).

Certain journeys on the 46B also go via Stepaside to Belarmine.

I would suggest that to do this journey that the options are:
44 from Stepaside to Balally and 114 or 115 to Blackrock
46B or 118 from Stepaside to Brewery Road and 114 from Leopardstown Road to Blackrock.

As already commented upon, none of the routes are high frequency and you need to plan with care!
