    Right folks,

I upgraded my macbook yesterday to 2 x 1GB sticks... (bought of crucial - great price and fast delivery by the way)

Only thing is.... it doesnt seem any faster??? I only had 512mb in before!

I havent tried any major video/audio apps yet.... but I expected it to be quicker at opening the usual such as itunes etc? Or just snappier in general?

Checked the system info and shows up as 2GB ram so no issue there.

Was I being naive thinkin it would make a difference?

    Try multi-tasking.

When you switch between large applications, you would notice the difference.
It doesn't "speed" up the computer as such, it just removes the need to read and write to and from the hard drive all the time.

One huge advantage is the ability to use many applications at the same time, without slowing down your computer.

In my own case, the speed difference between 512 MB and 2 GB was absolutely huge, literally the difference between waiting a minute and waiting a few seconds. But it depends on your usage. If you just turn on your computer and launch iTunes, you won't see much gain. But if you're using iTunes, Pages, Mail, Safari and a bunch of other apps at the same time, you will notice a very significant increase. Or if you use heavy duty apps like Photoshop obviously. Photoshop isn't even usable with only 512 MB.

its almost a shame you didn't try doing anything remotely heavy going before you upgraded :D

oh it'll make a massive difference when you get going!

Yeah I had the same issue and thought the RAM was at fault.

Then I loaded up FinalCut Pro and Soundtrack together that's when you appreciate the benefits of plenty of RAM. Editing and effects work smoothly and battery life increases because of less HDD access.

CS3 warns that it needs 1GB when you install it but it will run in 512MB . . . just . . . so long as you don't try to open a 24 layer 200 MB image !!! I tried and it was painful.

Aperture refuses to run in 512MB systems although there are hacks that will force it to.

Makes me wonder what kind of people can afford Aperture but not extra RAM to get it running properly...
