I remember seeing May a good few years ago and thinking director Lucky McKee was someone to watch, so I had read about his next film The Woods, and was quite eager. Last year, I had a rant here about it, as the film was due to be released in 2003, but it was shelved and only given a straight to video release in 2006, and at the time there was no sign of a Region 2 release. I only learned last week that it had been released for a while now, so I quickly ordered it.

It arrived today, and I've just watched it. Koneko had warned me that it was pretty average, and not to expect much, so I approached the film with caution. I can understand why it's considered average, and why it's gotten mixed reviews, because I'll be frank here, the ending was lame. That's the movie's greatest shortcoming, because for the first 70 minutes or so of the film is quite exceptional in that it's extremely well acted, very atmospheric and despite obvious comparisons with Suspiria and The Evil Dead, it actually felt a lot more like the old Hammer Horror films that I used to watch as a kid, where everything is nicely underplayed and there's a great brooding atmosphere.

It's a very subtle and understated film, and Lucky McKee is a very talented director... But the poor ended does dissapoint.

I did think it was very atmospheric but a little long and drawn out at times.
I really didn't understand what they were trying to do with the blonde firecrotch Girl. Could have broached it in from a different angle.

I really really enjoyed Bruce Campbells preformence and from when he vomits in the hospital to loses the axe I was feeling the Evil dead Bruce.
The Ending was a little abrute but had some nice Hack/slash moments.
Not a Bad movie to watch with some mates and critic while watching.

Yup, pretty much. Unfortunately no one warned me when I saw it and the mix of Lucky McKee and Bruce Campbell sealed the deal, I was really looking forward to it. I just felt let down by the time it was over, and it was all the more disappointing because at certain points I was really enjoying it and the build-up.

LOL i saw the thread title and I thought you were gona say " I watched the woods ....... and in atum the leaves fell " or somthing like that.

I have to say i have not heard of this one. Ill imdb it later and see what it is about. Though a bad ending can leave a bad taset in the mouth for me. I hate films where all the effort seems to go into the first half od the movie.
