Just a quick question. I'm in the US for the summer and I was wondering if I buy a Dell laptop over here will I be able to use it back home when it comes to DVDs and software sold at home etc?

I think you should be able to transfer the warranty over. Hard to say if the DVDs will work as American DVDs are Region 1, Ireland is grouped into Region 2. There are ways around that though.

Unless your unfortunate enough to get the dreaded " Mat****a " DVD drive , no region free available for some of those types , so check that out , otherwise .. most drives give you at least 5 region resets before permanently locking so you should be OK.

In any case , replacement drives are cheap enough.

Edit , funny the way boards put asterisks on a section of that particular manufacturers name , almost a sign :-)

Software, power and everything else will be fine. DVDs are the only thing, but as previous posters said, there are (legal) ways around this. One such way is VLC player - it bypasses the country protection on DVDs.

The other way, which I wouldn't chance, is to flash the firmware on your DVD drive.
