It's great for walkers - if your into hill walking. Very green and lush - which is not surprising as it rained heavily nearly every day I was there. I think the rainy season starts in mid September, so you should be okay. Mountainy interior, old volcanic remains and a friggin scary airport located on stilts jutting out of the coast - how the jets take and stop on that short runway is beyond me. Food is good, people are very friendly and it is warm - even when raining.

How good is the food mate? Do you get to stuff yerself with chinese like lanzarote? Is there shopping centres and most of all do they have net cafes and that. We're just afraid we are about to enter an un developed island.

Maderia is well developed and had a smattering of net cafe's (in the main towns) - and this was 1999 when I was last there. Roads are very good. Not much to say on the shopping – but the main town had the usual fashion shops and chains when I was there – the main town is quite cosmopolitan. It may have changed now but when I was there I don’t seem to remember much of a nightlife. Can’t remember anything about the food but I can say I never got the trots so it must be okay.

Was in madeira in march 06 the weather was dry and mostly sunny 21 deg.Stayed 2 miles outside Funchal ,loads of restaurants food is great not to expensive. If you like fish you have to try the Black Scaabbard fish with fried banana. You can take the Cable car up to the mountains and visit Montys Garden lovely views. enjoy your holiday.

was there last summer, lovely place though a bit boring, even in Funchal things got quiet early on , like 1 am ish. I'm sure there a clubs around but its not a clubby kinda place. The average age there is probably 70+. Food is good, people are nice, weather is good.

If you like walking its great, you can also do some big game fishing: marlin etc. or tuna, but that can be an expensive day out.
