Hi there folks. I have just bought a new static model of a lorry and I want to add my own touches to it like extra light bars and maybe so stack exhausts but i want some tips of how make them myself and out of what material. Also I want to put a paint job of some sorts on it (probably just some simple blending) but I have never painted like this before so some tis are also needed.
Are there any static modelling websites around as well?

I think thats enough questions for now :p
    Thanks

You`re probably not gonna like me answers....but..
    What material to use.?? ANYTHING.
plastic, wood, aluminium, brass... what ever you think you could use.
You can also buy plastic card in different thicknesses and plastic rod in different diameters which can be quite handy.
But one thing that is very useful is scrap bits. I have a box that every little bit that isnt used on a model is thrown into.
You can cut, glue, sand, file bits to make it what you want it to be.
Another thing to use is filler. I use miliput somtimes, but the type of filler I use most, is car body filler (isopon).
I collect things for modeling all the time. Places like the Art and Hobby shop. You pick up all sorts of things there. I even got tiny little mirrors there... to make well.. mirrors.
You can also get lots of aftermarket stuff, like braided hose, hose ends. for use in engines etc.

As for blending the paint. Say I wanted to do a body with blue on the top and green on the bottom.
I would paint the top blue to roughly below the line i want them to meet. Then simply spray the green to meet it, just taking my time until it is right. I would then give it a few coats of clear.

One thing to remember when making bits, if it doesnt look right throw it away and start again. Before ya drill any holes or cut bits off the actual model try and get the made up part to be nearly right.... if ya can!

Am I helpin ya at all???

Yeah thats a good help. Ill have to start looking out for some of the plastic card and plastic rod (I assume that can be got in most art places)
Have you seen any good static model websites that people go into a lot of detail on their models.I have saw a few before but I cant find them any more.
    Cheers

I dont really spend much time looking at model sites, I prefer magazines for that sort of thing.
I subscribe to Tamiya model magazine, Military model magazine and aircraft model magazine (all from the same company), and every now and then buy a few magazines in easons.
I used to look at www.missing-lynx.com, u might try that.

Thanks for the help Dok. Im having a look through your old thread for more tips.
Here is the model i will be getting
    http://www.modelhobbies.co.uk/shop/images/trucks/IT3829.jpg
and i am going for a look similar to the ones in the attached pics. Instead of the silver I was thinking red and instead of the green I was thinking black.
Would this be a good colour combo?
    Thanks

Hmmm.. it could be! but would the opposite be better? Black instead of silver and red instead of green?? What I do when im not sure about somthing like that....
Say you want black and red.
Paint a sheet of paper black, and do a few lines, or patches red.
take another sheet and do it red with a few lines and patches black...
it gives you an idea of how the colours will look on you model...

I really want to do a truck. The last time i did one was years ago (only a kid). I did the Italeri (or revell???) wrecker truck... did a great job infact. Had just finished it and left it on the mantle piece to display it. Was pretty proud of it!!
Anyways, went out with me mates, and when I came home one of the neighbours kids was in the house and picked it up and dropped it on the concrete fire place!!! i nearly cried!
Was this one... http://www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=IT3825 Painted it candy apple red!

Hmmm.. Hes grown up now ... think I might key his car!:D

see the green Scania above... do ya know what one that is?
I was looking at some aftermarket stuff, and I see things for "4 series"... i assume that is 141, 142, 143 144... etc?
I am fairly sure there is little difference between the chassis on these from what I can remember.. am I right?
So what about the 164? Is it a similar chassis or is there much difference?
..ahh boll ix... this is gonna cost me!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,149 ✭✭✭BFassassin

Well the 4 series is the 144 and the 164 afaik. The green one in the above pic is a longline version. I have never seen a model of one before you started putting up links and pictures :)
The 141 is the 1 series and the 142 is 2 series etc.

Have a look around ebay but i dont think italeri do a kit like that Longline one.

    Ah got ya..
The long line model is an Italeri one, but with a conversion kit like this

    longlineparts.jpg

    Ye see, I was thinking...
    I wanna use this model...
    http://www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=IT3819
But I want it to have 2 axles on the back... so there is a kit i can get to do that...
    scaniaairsusp.jpg

I always like the look of a truck with 2 rear axles...

Italer have 2sets of different truck accessories in 1/24 - light bars, mirrors, wheel covers, decals and even a couple of truckers :D

Where have you found all of this stuff Doktor :) Its great info. The twin rear axle does look better than the single axle.
Thanks for the input FiSe but I think i will have a go at making my own lights and exhaust etc. I dont think it needs a driver ;)

Everything I have found so far has been from this crowd... seems to be a well known source of truck after market parts...

Well Doktor. I have been thinking about paints and I will need to get some. All i have atm are some humbrol acrylics and super enamels and the only red i have is a hellar. Would these be ok to airspray and how much would i need? they are 12ml bottles. I am also going to get the tamiya brush you recommended to me before for the fine detail. Also do you put a varnish over your model once its finished? If so what do you recommend
    Thanks
edit: can you also recommend a good chrome paint

What airbrush have you got at the moment?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,149 ✭✭✭BFassassin

Its a compressor that was in aldi a year or two ago with an air brush attachment that came with it.
    It looks like this
    1f86_1.JPG
It probably isnt the best for airbrushing but i might try it on one of my old plane models during the week to test it out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,208 ✭✭✭The Doktor

Some of those cheaper ones arent half bad!
You often find that airbrushes are made by the same manufacturer, eg. Iwata, Tamiya, Gunze Sangyo, Olympic are all made by BB Rich airbrush company in japan. They are made to different standards for what ever the customer wants, so you do generally get what you pay for.
But I would bet the airbrush you have will be ideal for learning, until you out grow it.

The paint you have should be fine, but i personally thought the humbrol acrylic was woeful! I use tamiya acrylic mainly, though i use all sorts of other stuff including humbrol enamels for certain detailing.
Remember also that you will need to thin the paint for airbrushing so make sure ya get the right thinner. for example for tamiya acrylic you can use all sorts of stuff to thin it, but you cant beat the actual tamiya thinner its self!
When thinning you will use about 50-70% thinner to paint!
