I don't believe this... They're remaking Joint Security Area.

Yes, that's right, Joint Security Area, a film that I thought was so quintessentially Korean that it could never be remade by American studios, is being remade.

They're calling it Joint Security America.

I'm gobsmacked by this, really. I just don't know what to say, it's ridiculous. How can they take a film like JSA, which the tensions between North and South Korea are so utterly ingrained in the film, and remake it?

When we speak of a nation whose film industry remade The Wicker Man and put Nicholas bloody Cage in the role of Edward Woodward, such questions are ultimately pointless. Like most of the remakes themselves, in fact.

I heard about this a while back, I immediately dismissed it because the first thought that came to my head was "How can they make an American remake of a film which is specific to theKorean war??"

This is the first time I've seen the title 'Joint Security America'. FFS :(

Remember hearing about this quite a while ago. Their setting it on the US/Mexican border aren't they?

are they taking the piss? this film is so recent and poignant. america & mexico don't even have nearly the same relationship as north/south korea

    Just to modify Fysh's statement:

If it's foreign, the yanks will remake it. Cause it's like, you know, totally difficult reading subtitles, y'all.

You'd be surprised...I went to see Exiled with some friends a while ago, three of us liked it. Everyone else pissed and moaned about it being in a foreign language. Whatsmore, some were also pissed off with the general plot and directing, which I'll admit was different but it didn't take away from the enjoyment.

So now, that proves there is a huge market for these films to be 're-made' so that people can just sit there and not have to worry about paying attention or understanding what's going on as the 'dumbed down' version will do all these things for them.
So I have to admit, I will probably go see the remake, but I won't blame the makers for making it, I'll blame the vegetables who won't allow themselves to enjoy anything that isn't spelled out for them.

This makes literally no sense. Getting so sick of remakes.

I'll bet money this will be awful, along with the My Sassy Girl remake (which is going to turn a quirky funny movie into a standard, dull, by-the-numbers chickflick).

See this is what I don't get about people.
We are feed the Hollywood way of making films, the only way to see what the rest of the world is like is by watching their films, which can be fantastic, quirky, original and different.
Dubbing is out of the question for me, the last thing I want to hear is a yankee accent over an Asian movie for example, it's got to be the actors voice. Yes, there's a little bit of work involved in reading the subtitles, but get over it, a good film is always worth it.

As for re-making JS - LOL!

Couldn't agree more, it really annoys me that the excellence films like JSA, Oldboy cannot be left alone by Hollywood.

Agreed. Most of the incredible atmosphere of foreign movies gets lost when they are given the Hollywood treatment. For instance, the American remake of Nikita was nowhere near as good as the original.

Judging by the constant flood of remakes coming out of Hollywood it makes me wonder if they are unable to come up with new ideas themselves and are scouring the foreign movie market for good material.

*yawn* what's new? I died a little on the inside when they remade The Hitcher with 2 horny teens and Sean Bean. I'm still suprised it's taking so long to remake Wizard of Oz (which with the success of Transformers I bet Bay or Spielberg will snap it up eventually, probably be made into a trilogy too)

no remakes surprise me anymore. I havent seen this flick but no doubt there will be some spin on it. wait to see if its any good before knocking it though!

    ^ I agree.

The film isn't going to be a shot for shot remake of JSA which means there is some merit in having it remade. If done well it could be quite good. Obviously it could go the other way too!
