SATA HD won't run in windows

I recently acquired a 320gb sata-2 internal hard drive, made by Seagate.

I joined up the wires and nothing exploded, so that was ok.

On start-up, there was a message relating to the new drive so the computer seemed to be seeing it, but the only option in relation to setting it up led to a RAID management system, which was unusable for anything exept to tell me that there aren't enough sata hard drives to set up a raid array. I knew that already. Windows doesn't use it at all.

In the "add hardware" section of control panel, the drive appears, but can't be installed. Windows indicates that no driver is installed for the drive.

The Seagate web-site helpfully indicates that their drives don't need drivers to run on Windows XP, and they don't supply any, so sure are they of this.

My primary hard drive is IDE, but I thought it was possible to run both drives on the same computer. The new drive is connected to the SATA 1 connection on my motherboard.

Does anyone have any idea of how to fix this? Is it possible or have I overlooked some impassable barrier? I'd really love any good advice you can give. Cheers.

you need to format the drive before you can use it.

go to control panel / administrative tools / computer management

the go to disk management and initalize it there

No divers? Xp requires drivers if it's going to be your primary drive in, which this case it's not. So windows should work.

Go Control Panel>Admin tools>Comp mgt>Disk management. If it appears there format it and hopefully rock and roll.

If your bios sees it so should windows.

    Cheers lads,
Your tips helped me out, though I did have to fall back on the old stand-by of "downloading drivers for things which you thought didn't need drivers".

All seems to be going well now.

    Again, thank you both.

FYI .... No hard drive needs drivers , the " hard drive controller " may need drivers , but no hard drive does.

Hence , you will never find drivers on Seagate or any other hard drive manufacturers website ( unless they do controllers too ) .
If it had actually been the case that you did need drivers for your controller , the motherboard driver disk or manufacturers website would have been the place to look.
