Ok I realise I'm asking the wrong crowd here, cheap is not good I know. My Velbon has been giving me jip though and I spotted a tripod in Aldi for 17 quid yesterday. They've updated the website so I can't link. On the off chance, has anyone seen them? Are they a total piece of crap? I just want something stopgap until I can buy better and its across the road from me and money burns a hole in my pocket :)

I had a look at one 2 Thursday's ago in Rathmines. I initially intended on getting 2 of them just for holding my flashguns thinking they'd be light enough to carry around and they didn't look too big. I extended the legs fully, raised the column on it and it was a reasonable height and seemed very heavy for how light it looked. It wasn't sturdy at all when fully extended and there would be no way I'd trust it to hold an SLR, especially with a large/heavy lens attached.
I'm afraid the old story of you get what you pay for comes in here again. It would probably be fine for a large-ish point and shoot or prosumer camera (fuji 5600 range or similar) but defiitly not for anything heavier.

    Pete.

I have a hamma gamma 72 that I dont use ,it's missing the quick release plate though.
Gunns told me they could probably order one in if I was ever stuck (around 5-10 euro).
If you want it you can have it ,I gave julie one last year and I think she got some use of it.

I'm actually painting at the moment and clearing out stuff ,so I'd probably be throwing it out.

I was thinking about the same tripod exactly for flash gun, however there's no need for it now. And I can't buy things only that they could become handy :-)

Thanks all, I guess I'll give it a miss so! Hey Brian I'd definitely take it off you if you were throwing it out? You definitely not want it?

    Pete.

Now on my second Aldi tripod. Haven't had any difficulty with them even using a 300mm on my D200. I have a weight to attach just to add a little more stability on uneven surfaces and it seems to do the trick.

That said, I don't use it very often, only for portrait and commercial stuff. As football games I either hand hold or use a small monopod to reduce the weight being hawked around.

It's been around for a few years ,cathy in gunns said the plate should be handy to get.
Your more than welcome to it.
