Lilliput or Michael's?

First of all, is this even the correct forum? Is there no restaurant forum? Mods please move to right place if this isn't it.

Anyway, my beloved is returning from NYC today and I want to get nice food for a celebratory reunion lunch / dinner. I keep meaning to go to Michael's (Mount Merrion) but haven't managed it yet, despite living just around the corner. And I recently read good things about Lilliput in Stoneybatter.

Has anyone any experience of either?

I'm basically looking for a recommendation. It doesn't need to be either of these two, really, just something within driving distance of UCD.

    Grazie.

ps. I'm not looking to eat out, so I'm looking for a gourmet food shop.

Yeah, I went there anyway. Lovely location. Inside is gorgeous, staff are friendly, competent and distractingly good-looking. I didn't sit down as I was rushing but I picked up two tasty ciabatta creations, some delectable chocolate cake, and a bottle of Austrian Gruner Veltliner that I'm drinking as I type.

I'm planning on making an afternoon out of it some time over the next fortnight, when I have a day off.

One gripe - why the cheap-ass metal seating outside? That notwithstanding, I'm a soon-to-be-regular.

Um, and put prices on your wines!

Sample as much of the cheese as you can, and the olives. There are spicey red peppers stuffed with a strong and creamy goats cheese which is quite delicious if you like the afore mentioned tastes.

Yesterday I went there again and bought (among other things) a roasted yellow pepper with minced vegetables inside and mozarella on top. Seven quid or something, but gorgeous.

I see they stock a few of those pricey "Super Tuscan" wines too. Some Vega Sicilia too. Nice assortment.

Is there anywhere else good in my locality that I'm missing out on???

Not to my knowledge.....superquinn is always a good one! I'll pm ya if anything comes around.

Yeah, I'm a big fan of Superquinn Blackrock. Their specialist areas (cured meats, fish, cheese etc) are worth the trip alone. I'd prefer lower prices to all those paid staff packing bags though!
