hey guys, i've bought a nikon D80 from urgalaxy on ebay as i saw it recommended in one of the stickies here.

for those of you who have bought of them, did you need to send a copy of your passport? I've been requested to do so and just want to know if this is normal.

    thanks!

it is fairly normal for overseas sellers to request verification of identity. I've had to send copies of my pasport/driving license to sellers before. Just remember to blank out the last two blocks of digits on your credit card (if they want a copy of that too)

ok thanks! i paid thru paypal as verified member so don't have to send any credit card info.

I spent over €5,000 with URGalaxy, over the past 2 months and they've been fantastic!
Service is better than any online European company I've ever dealt with.
Didn't have to send any proof of identification, but I've got a good rating on eBay.

I had to send a copy of a driving license & a house bill the first time I was buying off Kea Photo, even though I was paying through Paypal.

Were you getting it sent to a different address than your Paypal address? Maybe they're just covering themselves in case you're using someone else's Paypal account...

hmm exactly how much info is needed to do a complete identity theft :p

If you send me a picture of your passport, credit card & a house bill, I'll see if that's enough.

Pretty sure anyone of them would get you a line of credit. Cant get over people sending their passport /driving licence details around like that.

I would be wary of a company holding that info let alone an internet only co that could go bust in a year or so and who knows where all that stuff will end up. Given a passport /driving licence lasts 10 years thats a bit of a risk in my opinion.

one thing that will get you "anywhere" is a garda badge.
Once this pri*k came to the door early one saturday morning, i had a hangover, he had a badge, I wouldn't let him in, it was nothing to do me (honestly). They were calling around house to see if anyone saw anything about something.

I asked him for the number of the garda station he was based at and his badge number, so i rang them (made sure garda street x) and asked him for a description of the garda in front of me, of course they were well pissed at me for doing it, I just said "you can't be too careful, now how can I help you ?"

Plus unless they have a search warrant, that should give you about 20-30 minutes on the phone yapping while someone can "tidy" the house :)

Think about it, a guy come to your house in the morning and flashes a badge and expects to come in, madness

I bought a lens from them before and was not asked for anything like this. That said it was a cheap item.

Spent a couple of million over the last few years and was never asked for anything. Odd really.

well it was delivered yesterday and is fine.

only thing was i bought the worldwide warranty card...but i since read that this isn't worth the paper it's printed on as nikon policy is that they will only repair it under warranty in the country you buy it front...

anyone had any luck using such a warranty?

Same here. That said he forgot to include it with the last lens. He sent it on by standard post when I reminded him.

Forgot? They never ship them with the lens, so that you wont get rumbled with regard to the true value of your purchase, if Customs open the box. The warranty is always posted separately!

Oh. It was in the box with the first lens I bought... I can see why it's a good idea to post it separately though.

It's a third party extended warranty available for camera equipment, and other electronic goods. URGalaxy include it with some of their items.

i bought the worldwide warranty from them for £29, is this not the same thing? if not then that was a waste of 30 euro!
