Program for Musical Composition

I will soon be a mac owner, and I'm looking to buy a decent programme for writting up musical compositions, eg. Sibelius.

I've used Sibelius on a PC before and I liked how it worked, but how does it handle on a Mac?

Furthermore, the version I used was a teacher's, so I didn't have to fork out the best part of a grand for it.

Basically, I'm asking if anybody has any recomendations for a nice (reasonably priced) Music Composition Programme, along Sibelius' lines?

    Cheers in advance.

Do you want it to specifically have a score layout? If so Sibelius or Finale (https://www.finalemusic.com/finale/) would be your best bets.

To be honest I think most people would agree the difference between those two packages largely comes down to what you feel most comfortable using. I use Sibelius myself but thats mostly because that's what I started off with. Finale is an equally good application. I would probably advise Sibelius though, seeing as you have already had some experience using it. With regard to how it's handled on a Mac - exactly the same! but like everything on a Mac, its just better and nicer hehe!

There are alot of other packages out there, but a good amount of them would be geared towards music technologists (like me) who are fairly techie. For instance there is a n excellent Java notation software that links in with a well known programming interface called Max/MSP but I doubt you would have the time to invest getting your head around that :)

http://ace.acadiau.ca/score/others.htm have a look there for some more ideas, but i woulld suggest either Finale or Sibelius to be your best bet for notation packages.

    Hope that helps

Yes, I need the score layout. Cheers for the suggestions.

It seems Finale is a cheaper choice (this would be my main concern :p). I don't mind spending a week or two getting to grips with a new programme, but would you think that perhaps Sibelius is worth shelling out the extra cash for?

I'm going to get the demo of Finale once my Mac arrives, but your insight into both programmes is much appretiated! :)

In that case, I'd go with Finale! There is much of a muchness, and lots of people prefer Finale, its a matter of personal taste really.

All the best with it. Any more questions feel free to ask!
