Airis T920 vs TomTom One (V2) Opinions/Recommendations Please

    Hi,

I'm looking to buy a basic SatNav system for <€250 and have narrowed it down to these two units. The Airis is about €230 and I think I should be able to get a TomTom One (V2) from the UK for under €250.

The Airis T920 seems to get very positive reviews on the PixMania website but I have seen a lot of concerns here about the ability to update the maps in the future. Seemingly going beyond the current Q2 2006 maps may not be possible, even though they are good at the moment. It is also older that the V2 TomTom and due to be replaced soon I believe.

The TomTom ones are a little more pricey but what is their future updatability like? I have access to newer DVDs of TomTom maps, I believe Tomtom 6 Western Europe map v6.60 build 1256 is the best one (better than version 6.75). I believe TomTom will only be using TeleAtlas maps in the future so perhaps they are not the wisest idea either?

I've read through a lot of posts here but would be interested in seeing which people think is the better option. I'm looking to get one or the other within the next week or so

    Thanks in advance,

Just wondering if I got the Airis without any maps for cheaper:

    http://www.pixmania.com/ie/uk/445720/art/airis/gps-unit-t920-without-map.html#fichetechnique

Would it be possible to get the maps from somewhere else and upload them?

I have found Route 66 Navigate 7 software on the internet including Navteq Q1 2007 maps, I believe this is the correct one for the Airis,
but it is a version for a Pocket PC so do you think it will work with the Airis? I dont want to buy it and then find I cant get the software to work!

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I don't believe that this forum is the right place to talk about P2P and warez ! If you want the right Route66 software that works on Airis, please buy an Airis T920 with route66 and maps ;)

    Thanks for reply.

I have taken your advice and bought a complete (and legitimate :) ) Chicago 8000 with European maps from Komlett.ie for €265 (great value compared to other places, its €333 from Pixmania). I think there is a better chance of Route 66 releasing future software updates for the Chicago series than the Airis, plus its newer and has a much bigger screen.

I'm assuming you can mod the Chicago in the same way as the Airis to play Divx movies (obviously legitimate ones :) ) etc?

I'll have to increase my knowledge of French before tacking your site though!

    Hey blobert,

Thinking of getting the same one from komplette also (Chicago 8000).
Did it come with a 2Gb SD card for that price.

    Thx

Yes it did, it's a 2gb card with all of Europe on it.

Had a bit of trouble getting it going out of the box, kept saying "no GPS" and seemed to think I was in Luxemburg.

In the end I formated the SD card, copied the folder from the included DVD back on to it, ran the update from the Chicago website, activated it and it worked a treat.

Just went out for a drive to test it, seems very good so far, nice big screen. Tried going the wrong way and it kept re-adjusting.

Would recommend it so far anyway.
