I'm just wondering, to any of you that own the console, is it living up to it's expectations.

I'm being put off by critics who only use it for a few hours.

I just want some consumer advice on whether or not to buy one.

At the moment, i'd say 360 is the console to own...but i reckon in a year or two, the ps3 will come into a world of it's own and will be the console to own.

    Do you own one?

No, I own a 360...but will reckon in the future, the ps3 will be the superior console ( not only technically but also gameplay etc )

You don't need to own one to know if it's living up to it's expectations yet, because it's obvious and clear that it isn't yet...

I own a ps3 and a 360, love them both, play both of them just about equally. The ps3 is great, the online store and infrastructure isn't as bad as many have said. Blu ray is excellent and so far the game I have (motostorm, Resistance, Oblivion, NHL 2k7 and COD 3 are keeping me very entertained. I also like the ps3 downloadable games more than the ones on xbox live. Add to that that most 3rd party games are coming out on PS3 and i'm very satisfied with my purchase.

However apart from being noisy I can't say a bad thing about my xbox 360. I have lots of fun with it, and there are some great games on back catalogue. So the 360 is definitely worth looking at too (if you don't already have one)

If you have the cash go for it, though maybe wait a week to see what the thursday announcement does to price.

(if you can get both :))

Ye I have a 360, and despite all the failure talk, mine hasn't given any trouble. The reason I'm enquiring is because my b'day is coming up and I would like to know if I should buy one or not.

    Suggestions?

I owned both (I say owned because I've sold my 360 before it broke down for the fourth time) - the PS3 hasn't disappointed in the slightest.

Compared to the 360, the machine just exudes build quality. It looks expensive, it runs silently and it seems to be extremely reliable. It's well documented how noisy and prone to melting down the 360 is. Other little touches like joypads with inbuilt rechargeable batteries so you don't have to buy extra ones and the fact that it supports so many standard usb devices - I've got a standard keyboard and three PS2 pads hooked up to it - really help too. Assuming you've got some PS2 pads lying around, by the time you'd have bought four joypads plus batteries for the 360, you'd already be getting close to the PS3's price. And that's before mentioning the larger, easily expandable hard drive, the built in wireless internet connection and the notorious blu ray player. Oh, and on top of that you never have to pay to play online - buy a 360 and you'll be paying fifty quid a year for as long as you use it.

So the PS3 may be more expensive than the 360, but don't think that means it's not as good value.

As for games, the 360 does have the advantage now but it's not as overwhelming as people like to pretend. Ignoring exclusives for a moment, buy a PS3 and you'll have Oblivion, Rainbow Six, Call of Duty, Virtua Tennis, Virtua Fighter, Tony Hawk's, Fight Night etc. - in reality most of the 360's best games are available on PS3, people just tend to look past them but if you're a first time buyer you'll have plenty to play on PS3. As for exclusives, personally I do think Crackdown is the best exclusive title on either console and it's on 360, but I can't think of any other 360 exclusive that I'd take over either Resistance or Motorstorm. And there's no 360 downloadable title that comes anywhere near being as good as Super Stardust HD. Also, right now I'd say Calling All Cars, another PS3 exclusive, is my favourite multiplayer game on either console (when I say multiplayer I mean with friends in the sitting room, not online. I'm not a fan of online and if I was I might be swayed slightly more towards the 360)

More importantly, looking forward, the PS3 is the only place you're going to find the next Gran Turismo, or the next God of War, or the next Ico or Shadow of the Colossus, or the next Metal Gear Solid(as much as you'll hear rumours to the contrary, there's absolutely no evidence MGS4 will be on 360 and if it is it won't be fore a long time, while it's 100% guaranteed to come to PS3), or the next Final Fantasy, or the next Ratchet & Clank. Not to mention, maybe more excitingly, a hell of a lot of original games that look stunning like Uncharted, Lair, Heavenly Sword and Little Big Planet. The 360 is the place to get the next Halo or the next Fable, but for me personally the PS3 exclusives have a far stronger pull.

Anything else to mention? Well, the joypad. The 360 pad is far superior for first person shooters, the PS3 pad is far superior for everything else, pretty much as simple as that. The PS3 is completely open to third party peripherals though - the 360 needs special licensing from microsoft. Starting to see that translate with things like the Rock Band guitar being advertised as 20 quid cheaper on PS3 than 360.

Thanks Stevie but Gears of War is one of the best games I've ever played.

The only game that's beaten a 360 game for graphics is Oblivion and other games have only missed out by milimetres.

I will consider buying it but I just wanna know what the problems are, if any?

You wouldn't do any harm waiting until Thursday when sony announce their future plans at E3 including a possible price drop. It's what I plan on doing. Also a factor for me is if we see any news on Metal Gear's exclusivity. This should be the beginning of the good times for the PS3.

i own a 360 and ps3 and tbh since getting the ps3 (at launch), i've used it a lot more. i've even held out getting games on 360 so i can get them on ps3 (oblivion, par example), and gotten games like rainbow6 on it, even after owning it on 360, purely for the free online multiplayer.

Own both and rarely touch the PS3 at all. What I have on the 360 is what I can get on the PS3 so there's nothing really outstanding yet. I'd say wait until it gets closer to Christmas and then judge both.

No problems with the hardware. So far there is only a 1% failure rate. Ive had no trouble with mine and I dont know anyone who has had trouble with theirs. Price cut coming soon, a good reason to get one.
