Would I be right in thinking that the Viewsonic monitor would have a better definition than the Dell monitor?

Is Viewsonic a well known brand?

    Dell monitor 19" widescreen
    Optimal resolution of 1440 x 900 at 60Hz

    Viewsonic 20" widescreen
    Maximum resolution of 1680 x 1050

A better resolution yes. A better definition would be a matter of personal choice.

Does better resolution not therefore automatically mean better definition?

Nope, LCD's can vary in picture quality with the specifications of the panel (contrast, brightness, timings, colour accuracy).

So therefore it would not be possible to compare the definition of different monitors by comparing manufacturers specifications?

Definition could only be compared by looking at the monitors whilst going?

    Oh right. That complicates things...

Just look around for reviews of the monitors you want in your price range. Which ever has the most good reviews you buy. Simple really.
