So going to bite the bullit and finally get an mp3 and have decided on the above. just one very quick question about it. I can' remember if it was here or maybe someone said it to me at some stage but is it still possible to download music someone elses music even if they haven't got the software that comes with it loaded on their pc. Not of course that i would do such a thing. just curious.

You can use third party software (like the excellent MediaMonkey) to upload your own (or other peoples) mp3s.

You don't need any software if you run Windows XP or newer, the device will show up in 'My Computer' you can browse the folders and copy to/from it without any issues.

You don't just need windows xp, you need to have windows media player 10 or higher installed for the pc to be able to recognise the device. You can then use it as drag and drop harddrive in windows explorer.

It will definitely work without having to install or update any software if you're using vista.

the creative zen M is a great unit and good value for money, I have one. However mine does not work anymore, it wont charge,
pretty ussless if you want to use it outside the house.
I have looked at the creative site for a fix but found their answers to be lame and vague, there is obviously a problem here as there are loads of posts on the web about this.
I will have to bring my Zen back to Dixons where I will have to have a row with one of there sales people because i no longer have a receipt, they will of coures after a lot of hassle have to take it in for repair (usual sale of goods
act speech etc.) the thoughts of this make me feel like chucking it in the bin as it will probably be obsolete by the time i get it back.

Did you contact Creative directly yet? If you are within warranty you should
be covered and based on recent feedback on here they are pretty good
    with their support and warranties.

XP comes with V10 of Media Player. It's ready out of the box. You are right though, the MTP drivers get updated when you upgrade media player. If you are running Windows XP then upgrade to MP11, Vista ships with MP11 as default.

    cheers
