PS3 price drop in Europe?

The price drop in America has been confirmed, and fairly surprisingly, it looks like Europe won't be left out afterall.

    http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=79169
Sony has told GamesIndustry.biz that a major announcement regarding the price of the European PS3 will be made on Thursday at its E3 conference.

Although unwilling to be drawn on specifics, a spokesperson did confirm that the announcement will be related to the price cut of the PS3 in North America, and the introduction of a new 80GB model.

Update! According to CVG, this isn't looking so much like a pricedrop, as a new bundle - a 'value related' announcement. So don't hold your breath just yet..

Since the price is a direct $ to € conversion, the price drop should be €100 too... but you never know with Sony!

Would be a €75 drop, no?

Will it make a difference though?

At €499 it will be able to compete much better with the 360 on a price level but if the 3rd developers keep dropping and delaying PS3 versions of their games will it be enough?

We're so soon after launch that I'm not sure what it would be wise to expect. It wouldn't surprise me if any drop wasn't as big given it's not been out here as long.

Apparently in Belgium or Holland, Sony had already started selling a Motorstorm bundle for the same price, so it could be as simple as making that Europe-wide, or perhaps that bundle but with a smaller price cut. Who knows.

Looks like I may have been too right about a bundle.

CVG is saying that Sony is planning a 'value-related' announcement for Europe rather than a price drop. i.e. they'll have a new bundle, most likely. I guess it is indeed too soon for a price drop here.

Feck!! Knew i bought it too soon, Games avalible is sonys biggest enemy at the moment, price is 2nd, the 360 practically beats it hands down in the games department at the moment.

Id say Microsoft have Sony's ass for this one, now that the ps3 will have dropped, XBOX will too

At the moment, but that looks like changing very quickly in the next month or two.

I think it's also very easy to overstate third parties 'delaying' PS3 games - there's been a few, out of the scores of games scheduled for the year, with most still coming well in time for Xmas anyway. And there's rumours of a couple of games being 'delayed' on 360 too, so it may not be an entirely one way street. Both systems look to have strong lineups in the autumn/winter IMO.

Will you buy a PS3 if there is a price cut?

    I might even buy a 2nd one.

If the price drops it'll make preowned machines even cheaper, thats where I'llbe going for bargains, so if you've got one and want to get shot of it, better sell it to me now!

Thing is, surely the Sony shareholders won't be terribly impressed with this, given how much they are losing per console sold now

Yes but if they want to sell it, seeing as it is highly priced, they will have to bring the price down.

I don't think so too. Here's a preview of some of the games on all consoles.

Some PS3 games are on the 360 and the PC, but there's hope there with many good titles. I don't own a PS3 but I look to be getting one, if i can get some good advice.

Sony have lost money on every console since the ps1, subsidised by the massive profits on the games. Micro$oft are the same. Sony will be quite happy once they pump out the games.

Plus, according the the radio today, X-Box has outsold the PS3 by 2-1 and the Wii outsold the X-Box by more than 2-1

Microsoft aren't quite the same. I recall reading that if the xbox 360 division makes a profit this year it will be it's first....ever

Last figure I saw was loss making, but its probably changed since - definitely will be in loss with the $1B they are going to have to pay for the extra warranty.....

Expect a new bundle, not a price drop - so says CVG, anyway. The interview with SCEA on Gamespot suggests that too. He talks about Sony Europe 'adding value', which I think was a careful choice of words on his part. Adding value = bundle, not a price drop as such.

I can't see a price drop either, it would look very bad and give the image of a sinking ship.

What Sony need is some quality titles, not a price drop. The 360 has most of the games that are on the PS3 right now and they happen to look a bit better on the 360 too.

sorry I might not have been clear, I meant I've read that microsoft have never made a profit from the xbox division. This year was going to be the first year but that may be down the swanee with the refund bill.

Not a smart move on the part of Sony. People in Europe are already disgruntled by the existing difference in price. Why make it larger?

I'll be surprised if a Sony representative doesn't turn up at my door demanding an extra $100 from me.

This looks like what the announcement will be:

    A bundle, but a better one than I was expecting - PS3 60GB + Motorstorm + Resistance + an extra Sixaxis for the usual €599 (or €630 here :p)
