    Hi all,

I will be going travelling for a year in a few months and I plan to store all my photos on cds, memory sticks etc but would also like to upload them onto a website for some added security that I won't lose all of them (sorry my pessimistic streak!!)

Anyway was just wondering if there were sites that you can store full size photo files and one where they aren't compressed into tiny files not fit for printing as a lot of sites seem to compress files? Camera is 7MP by the way. Don't have the camera yet so not exactly sure how big the files will be.

    Thanks!!

If you're shooting jpeg and only want the jpeg, the Pro account on flickr will do you. Otherwise, maybe buy some hosting, and put all the files onto that?

www.flickr.com solves all your woes. If you're worried about compression, colour shifts, storing raw files, carbon footprints, little baby monkey's and so on, buy a cheap webhosting account and use it as a ftp dump for all your files. Then when you get home, spend months downloading them all to process them before you put them on flickr.

Or, cut out the middle man and sign up for a flickr pro account.

Yeah jpeg should be fine, does the pro account cost anything - checked the site but couldn't see whether it did or not?!! :D
    Thanks!

something like $25 for a year. Considerably cheaper than a years hosting.

I paid $24.95 for a year. Sign up for a free account and you'll soon see the links prompting you to upgrade to pro :)

I use flickr myself ... but as an alternative you could also consider

    www.travelpod.com

This site is geared towards travellers and also includes a blog ... if you are into that kind of thing ...

I've used in the past when travelling ...

a word of warning, if you are trying to upload 300 2MB photos in an internet cafe you'll be sitting there for literally hours and hours

I will hopefully be able to use a friends broadband to do most of the uploading after the first leg of my travels but yeah there will be a few hours wasted in net cafes I'm sure!

amd.streamload.com is also worth trying depending on how much you need to store.

Isn't flickr limited to 2gig of uploads per month ?

Wouldn't be enough in such a short space of time.

No, not anymore. It's all unlimited now, for the pros anyway.

One of the original reasons I joined Flickr was to post up travel shots in case of damage/theft etc. as well as to keep everyone up to date back home.
But, in the more out of the way places, you'll have to be prepared for a LOT longer than a few hours if you want to upload all your pictures. I had a 5MP camera but rarely uploaded more than 4 or 5 at a time.

However getting the photo's transferred to TWO Cds was pretty cheap and one went into the back of the rucksack and one went into the post home to provide another backup as well as more pictures for your nearest and dearest....

    A few more tips
    - Make sure you have enough Flash card memory, and then a bit more...
    - Get a spare battery...
    - Switch off all the beeping...

    Enjoy your trip.

    Hi bigeoino,

Thanks for the advice, was thinking of posting cds home alright so doing that and trying to get most of them on flicker should ease my mind! Will buy a lot more NiMh batteries before i head off too. With this weather i wish i was going tomorrow!
