How does one become a councillor?

I am attracted to the idea of community work, but am not a member of any political party nor feel any particular affinity toward one party over the others. Is it necessary to be sponsored by a party to become a councillor? Are there independent councillors?

You can become an independent councillor but you need to be well known in your community. You should get involved with clubs, charities, residence associations and other community groups. ie the more local work you do the more people know you and hence you get votes. Even FG and FF candidates have to do an amount of this although it’s easier for them.
